An unusual copper alloy buckle plate or mount made in several parts. The rectangular plate consists of a backing plate of copper alloy sheet with another sheet over the top, cut out in the centre to form a rectangular border on the upper surface. This is held in plate by a rivet on the outside edge. In the centre of the rectangular border is another rectangular cut sheet held in place by a single central rivet. This sheet fits between the backing plate and the border. A figure of a winged dragon is riveted onto the centre of this sheet, presumably to allow it to move. The figure is mad…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper alloy Medieval buckle, D-shaped with an integral plate. The plate is trapezoidal in form, tapering from the width of the buckle frame to the broken end. There are two circular holes drilled in the plate below a ridge separating the buckle frame from the plate. A central circular hole (to accommodate a pin, now missing) partly cuts through this ridge. Most of the buckle frame has been lost. Similar buckles have been interpreted as spur buckles, but it is not possible to be certain of the form of the broken end on this example.

A copper alloy buckle with a double oval loop and integrally cast central bar. The central bar protrudes slightly at either end. In the centre of the outside edges there is a semi-circular knop with incised radiating lines and two moulded ridges on the adjacent frame. The pin is wrapped around the central bar and is missing its tip. The frame is worn on one side of one edge.

A copper alloy D-shape buckle with a separate plate. The frame has a wide, curved outside edge and terminates in a knop at each end of the constricted bar for attachment of the pin and plate. The pin is cast with a ridge before a short, tapered point. It is accommodated in a recess in the plate, which is constructed from a single sheet of copper alloy wrapped round the bar. This is cut on the underside to leave an almost semi-circular plate of single sheet thickness. There is a hole for a rivet in the outer end of the plate.

A copper alloy shoe buckle with a separate stud chape. The buckle frame is oval and slightly thicker in the centre of the outside edges. The centre of the upper and lower edges are internally convex and probably have holes drilled for the separate central bar. This appears to have an integral chape with a rounded terminal on which is riveted a stud (not clearly visible on the photograph used for recording). No pin is visible. The buckle may have had a white metal surface coating, now blackened.

A single looped D-shape copper alloy buckle with an integral plate. The buckle has a recess for the pin, which is wrapped around this and tapers to a point, resting on the outside edge of the frame. The trapezoidal plate extends from the frame on the upper side (separated by a groove), but on the underside a separate backing plate has been attached with a single rivet. Leather survives between the two plates of the belt fitting. The plate widens from 18 to 23 mm across.

A copper alloy Medieval buckle with an oval looped frame. The buckle has a wide outside edge which is recessed for a separate sheet roller (now lost) between two knops. The opposing edge is recessed for attachment of a separate plate, also lost. A small notch in this edge may be due to wear from the pin. The frame appears to be lozenge shaped in section.

A copper alloy buckle with four incurved sides and a central bar. There is a quatrefoil-shaped knop at each corner. The frame is decorated on each side with an engraved repeated motif of three radiating lines. There are two short engraved lines on each segment of the knops (with a groove separating the segements). The pin survives and is in the form of a strip wrapped round the central bar and tapering to a point. The frame and central bar appear circular in section and longitudinally ridged.
A similar buckle can be seen in Egan & Pritchard (1991, 102-3, no. 471).
