A Post Medieval - Modern ivory incomplete object (probably 16th-18th century). The object is a pointed oval in plan with a D-shaped cross-section so the reverse is flat and the front convex. The rounded end is complete and has been worked to form a rounded point. There is an oval perforation at this end that may be deliberate or accidental. A Post Medieval - Modern bone button or bead making waste fragment (AD1400-1800). This is a worked fragment of a long bone cut to form a D-shaped cross-section. There are five circular interlocking holes where discs (circa 10mm in diameter) have been cut from the fragment.
Dimensions: diameter: 10mm; length: 89mm; width: 17mm; thickness: 8mm; weight: 9.35g.

A small bone spoon with a shallow oval bowl. The handle flares until it is oval in shape at the terminal end. It is flat and slightly thinner at the end than near the bowl. There is a step between the handle and the underside of the bowl. The bowl is partly missing.

Terminal of a bone implement ending in a hooded figure. The lower remaining part of the stem is decorated with a complex series of incised rings and grooves. The neck of the figure extends directly from the uppermost incised ring, tapering inwards before widening slightly to form the figure’s head. Above this the stem again tapers to form the pointed tip of the hood. Diagonal incisions indicate the folds of the hood around the neck and there is a sharp incision at the base of the head. Fragment of a double-sided bone comb made in one piece. The comb has a central rectangular bar and is thicker in the centre than the ends of the teeth (which are slightly tapered). On one side the teeth are 3mm apart, and on the other 1mm apart. The ends are missing.
Similar combs are illustrated in MacGregor (1985) p. 80, fig. 47; he dates this type with slender cross-section to the post-medieval period, 16th to 18th century.

Antler handle for a knife or fork. The handle is circular in section, tapered and slightly curved. The wide end has been cut and striations are visible on the surface. There is a hole in the centre of this end, possibly to attach a cap. The other end is hollow for insertion of a tang. The handle may not have been used. It is difficult to date such an item and this may be relatively recent.

Pierced bone handle, possibly of an awl or similar tool. Highly polished worked bone, circular in section and tapering to the end which has broken off. Part of one side has been lost or cut away. There is faceting of the edges around the wide end. The handle is pierced through with a circular hole 13mm from the wide end. The object could also be a large needle for netting or similar coarse work (see Margeson 1993, 186 no. 1449 for a Post-Medieval example).

Bone weaving shuttle, oval with pointed ends, constructed from one piece of bone with a small interior bridge remaining between the two flat sides. The exterior is highly polished and some loss has occurred of the edges each side. There is a small (c. 2mm diameter) circular perforation in the side of the interior section to take the thread.

Carved ivory knife handle with whittle tang and remains of iron knife blade. The iron bolster is integral to the blade. The end of the handle is and decorated with concentric circular grooves. Further concentric grooves are at the blade end of the handle. Between these, the decoration is within three spiralling bands filled with cross-hatching and rows of incised lines.

Worked bone terminal, possibly from a knife. Roughly domed profile with two flat sides. There is a ridge at the bottom and top of the domed part, with two semi-circular indentations above this before widening again to a flat top. The top and bottom are rectangular in section with rounded corners. On the two flat surfaces there is engraved decoration consisting of a quatrefoil made up of three spirals and a loop at the bottom, with shaded areas between.
