Object type: COIN WEIGHT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy Medieval or Post-Medieval coin weight. It is a round flan and uniface, with the design of three lis in a shield with crown over. The flan is 11.21mm in diameter, 2.04mm in thickness and weighs 1.46g. This is most likely a weight for the English or French half ecu, which was issued from the reign of Charles VII, 1422-61, to Louis XI, 1436-75AD. The ecu was current in England in 1525, for four shillings. It is not possible to say whether this is a French or English coin weight. ( Withers 1995, Lions, Ships and Angels, p39).
