Object type: WINGED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Fragment of late Middle to Early late Bronze Age winged axehead with side loop. Only the central section survives with a loop on the underside of the flanged body and old brittle fractures at either end where the butt end and majority of the remarkably thin axe blade have broken away. The wings are long with the ends turning sharply inwards towards each other to secure the original haft. No stop ridges. Dark brown water patina with casting seams largely removed. Penard to Ewart park metalwork phases circa 1300-800 BC. A similar and more complete axe can be seen at BH-BE3C94 on the Por…

Description: Incomplete post-medieval silver probable hawking or huntsman's whistle. Very neatly made, it is a very slightly flaring cylinder, the wider end with a convex cap which brings the maximum diameter up to 6.7mm. There is a groove around the circumference here which may represent a soldered join, or which may be merely decorative; there are two further circumferential grooves on the cylindrical body of the whistle. Approximately halfway up the whistle there is a D-shaped lip or sound hole, through which it is possible to see the bottom of a rectangular piece of sheet ru…

Object type: WHETSTONE
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a Roman to Medieval pendant whetstone. The stone is rectangular in plan and square in cross-section. At one end it is perforated by a circular hole to secure it via a thong or suspension ring to a strap or belt. The material is brown to grey in colour and is possibly a finegrained sandstone or even a form of Schist. The faces are marked with scored lines as the scars of use. Manning (1995 :261-262) notes that whetstones are very common on Roman sites, especially military ones. Likewise it is known that Vikings wore pendant whetstones from the belt. Shopland N. A…

A fragment of a probable Early Medieval to Medieval pendant whetstone. The stone is rectangular in both plan and cross-section. At one end it is perforated by a circular hole to secure it via a thong or suspension ring to a strap or belt. The thickness is greater at the perforated end where it tapers in a shallow curve to the broken terminal end. The greater thickness at one end probably derives from the fact that it was held by this end when in use. The material is dark grey in colour and is probably a form of Blue Phyllite, the surface of which is smooth and fine, but the sides i…

A damaged and corroded Post Medieval copper alloy traders weight. The form is classic for its type consisting of a circular flat base with a raised rim, the outside edge of which is slightly angled. It is stamped with two capitalised letter "A"s indicating the weight is based on the averdepois system, a ewer mark of the London founders company, and the word SURREY. The weight has a large cross-shaped crack across its centre. It is 30mm in diameter and weighs 25.14g so allowing for damage and corrosion therefore, it was most probably a 1oz weight. The weight dates from the 18th to the…

A simple cone-shaped lead weight, with a circular base. There is a perforation running through the centre of the weight from base to apex. The weight is undecorated but shows surface damage most likely post-loss. These weights are difficult to date and it is possible they could be fishing or net weights to provide mass or weights that are part of a weighing system. However due to a lack of excavated examples and associated dating context this weight can only be assigned a very wide date range. The weight is complete. The lead is a light whitish-grey colour.

This record consists of two objects found in relatively close proximity to one another on the same field. A pair of Medieval to Post Medieval lead alloy discs. Both sides of the objects are un-decorated without any visible method of attachment or suspension. The lack of diagnostic features makes it difficult to be definitive about both purpose and date but they could possibly be pan weights. One of the objects has a small wedge of metal missing from the outside edge that represents about 10% of the flan. Weight on left - 34.45mm dia, 6.91mm thick, weight 60.18g Weight on right -…

A complete Post Medieval cast copper alloy weight. The weight is stamped with two annulets and another mark, probably an unofficial lion passant. These types of weight were used by goldsmiths and the annulets represent the number of pennyweights or grains in the Troy system of measure. Biggs (Antique Weights (1998) p18) assigns a date of circa 1800 to these weights. The weight measures: 11.87 mm long, 10.96 mm wide, 3.38 mm thick, and weighs 2.92 grams.

A Roman to Post Medieval cast lead alloy standing weight. It is conical with a flat base and truncated top. There is a circular shaped hole running through it from bottom (7.5mm hole diameter) to top (6.3mm hole diameter). The overall dimensions of the weight are 23.1mm diameter, 15.0mm tall, and it weighs 31.96g. Plain weights were cast locally in lead from the Roman period onwards and are difficult to date precisely, although most are late Medieval to Post Medieval in date.

A Medieval to Post Medieval cast lead alloy object, probably a weight. The weight is circular in plan with a concentric circular depression on one side forming a wide rim. Since lead is so easy to fabricate lead weights such as this with simple functional designs, have been produced for many centuries. Accordingly, without archaeological context they are difficult to date precisely. A range of circa 1000-1800 is suggested for this example. Dimensions: diameter 45.05mm; thickness 17.95mm.

Post Medieval cast uniface lead alloy half-ounce (0.47 actual) discoidal traders weight. The weight is stamped with the capitalised initials 'CR' surmounted by a crown. This motif is in turn surmounted by a separate 'U' or horseshoe-shaped stamp, one arm of which breaks out to an area of slight damage on the periphery. There are similar examples recorded on the PAS database cf NMS-525917 and NMS-C9AF83, the latter of which also has the same horseshoe stamp. The weight in all likelihood can be attributed to the reign of Charles I or Charles II and as such dates to circa 1625-1685.

Copper alloy uniface circular trade weight. One face is marked with a crowned "C" with a ewer stamped at the 7 o'clock position. The ewer is the London Founders Company mark. The weight is 1.6g (24.7 grains) which allowing for damage and corrosion may well equate to an averdepois dram, which weighed 1.77 grammes. The crowned C stamp suggest the weight dates from the reign of Charles I or Charles II. Circa 1625-1685 AD.

A Late Saxon copper alloy disc-shaped weight with convex sides. It is decorated on both faces with six punched annulets. On one face these are arranged in two rows of three and on the other in a circle. Its weight does not conform to any units recorded in Scull (1990) or Kruse (1992). Circa 10th to 11th century AD; cf.
