Fragment of copper alloy domestic vessel leg, probably from a cauldron, posnet, or skillet. Solid and moulded into a lingulate shape (52mm extant length by 25.2mm wide by 18.5mm thick) with an oval cross-section. Broken at both ends, one face has a slightly extended moulded flange, with a central crest, whilst the reverse is plain. The fragment is heavy for its size commensurate with an antimony leaded-bronze alloy that is commonly used for casting cooking vessels - see Dungworth, D. and Nichola, M Caldarium? An antimony bronze used for medieval and post-m…

Copper alloy vessel rim fragment. The body is 2mm thick increasing to 3mm at the very slightly everted rim. The curvature of the rim suggests an original vessel diameter in the region of 180mm. Crudely made cast copper alloy vessels were widely used from c.1200-1700 for serving and cooking. Butler and Green (2003; 15) state ‘there is evidence that (cast copper alloy) metal cooking vessels became increasingly common during the 13th and 14th centuries. Although earlier copper alloy vessels are known they are rarer and mostly of sheet metal or hammered out (ibid; 7). …

Copper alloy mount, cast as a U-shaped blunt hook. The tapering circular cross-section hook springs at right angles from a wider flat topped 5mm thick head. The sub-triangular-shaped head (in plan) has a double lip to the sides, as if it originally attached or expanded into the body of a thin-walled vessel, such as a dish, bowl or similar. A similar shaped hook can be seen at SWYOR-F7C241 albeit the method of attachment appears to differ. Probably date is medieval, circa AD1000-1500.

Heavily sooted and corroded Medieval to Post Medieval cast copper alloy pot leg and foot. Lingulate shape with the thickened foot end kicking forward slightly. Central arris slightly concave to either side. Old break to the end originally attached to the vessel. Very heavy for its size the alloy is probably leaded. Medieval pot legs similar to this type have been catalogued by Egan (1998, pp. 164-166). The most closely comparable with this example is no. 457 which has been dated to Ceramic Phase 11, AD 1350-1400. According to Geake (2001, PAS Staff Finds Recording Guide), cooking vess…

Fragment of cast copper alloy Medieval to Post Medieval cooking vessel rim sherd, probably from a cauldron or skillet. Sub-rectangular in shape with a pitted and brown-coloured corroded surface. The outside surface of the fragment is covered with concentric score marks presumably as vestiges of the manufacturing process. Cast copper alloy vessels were widely used for cooking over open fires from c.AD 1200-1800 (Butler, Green and Payne 2009:1). Circa AD1250-1750.

Crude Medieval lead alloy pot mend. Two sub oval offset discs one very slightly concave on its outside surface, the other with a raised boss; both encapsulate a sherd of ceramic pot within. The ceramic fragment is Medieval with a dark grey reduced colour to the body, and a shell temper. There are also strands of a light brown sturdy fibre of consistent thickness penetrating between the lead mend and the ceramic. There is no sign of weave to this and it may simply be intrusive roots; however, the find has been cleaned and out of the ground for many months without the strands decaying, …

Crushed lead alloy hollow circular vessel with 28mm diameter flat base and raised 29mm high sides; the wall thickness is approximately 1.5mm. The vessel has been crushed inwardly from both sides, the rim is damaged and has split vertically along a soldering or casting seam. The seam is mirrored unbroken on the diametrically opposite side of the vessel. There is no decoration or marks that are indicative of purpose or date. Small lead/lead-alloy vessels were commonly used for a variety of functions in antiquity, including such things as bird feeders, powder measures, holy water contai…

Rim sherd fragment of a large copper alloy cast cooking vessel. The rim itself is thickened in a D-shaped section (curve innermost) on the inside lip. Sufficient arc length of the rim survives to approximate the original vessel diameter to around 340mm. Green colouration with traces of a black patina remaining on both surfaces. Cast copper alloy cooking vessels of this type were in use from the earlier part of the Medieval period through into the early 18th century when cast Iron became favoured. As such fragments without context are difficult to date precisely. Circa AD1400-1650.

Two small fragments of large copper alloy cast cooking vessel. One thicker slightly everted rim sherd (5.9mm thick at rim 4.2mm elsewhere) and one thinner body sherd (3.3mm). There is nothing to suggest they came from the same vessel, albeit they both have the same colouration and substantial sooting on both the inside and outside surfaces. The rim sherd is broken across a slight crescentic swelling in thickness at its lower extremity, perhaps suggesting the fixing of a handle at this point. There are no distinguishing features on either sherd. Cast copper alloy cooking vessels of thi…

Incomplete copper alloy equilateral triangular plate, possibly an attachment mount or flange from a vessel handle. The object has a flat back and carries no decoration on either side. There is a circular hole positioned centrally with another, medially aligned, close to the apex. The side away from the apex has a fractured surface in the centre only extending for 23.5mm of the 43mm long side; suggesting the width constricted abruptly at this point - as might be the case for a carrying handle or lug. The plate is 3.6mm thick and is grey in colour …

Solid copper alloy (probably leaded bronze) Medieval to Post Medieval vessel handle probably from a ewer or cooking pot. The handle has an oval cross-section and bends halfway in a sharp curve through just over 90 degrees. It expands at either end and tapers smoothly outwards to a transversely aligned oval flange. On the reverse of both flanges are the stub remains of large rivets which would have attached the handle bridging the everted rim of the vessel. One rivet has a regular axially aligned slot across its end. The knee of the outer curve in the handle is stamped with two square …

Copper alloy, probably Roman zoomorphic terminal. The object is cast and fashioned in the shape of the curving neck and head of a long-necked bird, with extended beak. The form is probably that of a waterfowl, such as a swan, or goose with low-relief moulded detailing on one side only, the reverse being flat. The side of the beak has carefully moulded 'teeth' which probably represent the serrations evident along the bills of many larger waterfowl. The eye-shape is lenticular, defined by a moulding with a white-metal coated eye at its centre. There is further detailing where the beak j…

Incomplete copper alloy Medieval to early Post Medieval foot from a domestic vessel such as a small cauldron, skillet or ewer. A small part of the triangular-section leg survives with an old transverse brittle fracture uppermost. The leg extends into a larger three-toed moulded foot. The object is a mottled green to dark brown colour with considerable darker sooty patina extant. Circa AD 1200 to 1700 but more typically AD1300-1600.

Copper-alloy repair patch or folded 'paperclip' type rivet from a Medieval to Post-Medieval vessel. Fashioned from a lozenge shaped copper alloy sheet it is double reverse folded from each side and would have been used to repair small splits in copper alloy vessels. One reverse folded terminal triangle is missing from an old break. The patch has an even dark green patina. Egan gives a broad date range for this type of pot mend, dating from the Early Medieval to Post Medieval periods ( Material Culture in London in an Age of Transition, page 101) but also suggests a central usage perio…

Incomplete cast copper alloy (leaded-bronze) Medieval to Post Medieval large cooking vessel fragment. The fragment is comprised of a section of the everted rim with the remnant of the integrally cast D-sectioned tapering handle projecting perpendicularly. There are brittle breaks at all of the ends, and almost all originally exposed surfaces have traces of soot. The rim is estimated at an outside diameter of 150mm and initially slopes inward towards the internal body of the vessel; however, sufficient material survives at the base of the vessel fragment to indicate that the main body…

Copper alloy late Medieval zoomorphic vessel spout in the form of a hollow dogs head; probably from a laver or ewer. The curved horn-shaped interface with the original curved body of the vessel has significant remains of solder on its internal surface. The spout turns through approximately 90 degrees and terminates in a geometrically moulded dogs-head. The mouth is open wide and a short tapering pentagonal tube protrudes. Mid to dark green patina. There are many other recorded examples of similar spouts on the PAS database cf. BUC-C3BEE8, and LIN-51CA17. Circa AD1400-1500.
