Heavily corroded iron rotary key of Medieval to Post Medieval date. The finer detail of the key is somewhat obscured by extensive corrosion and active spalling of the surface, but it remains complete. The bow is an open D-shape with a slightly angled outside loop. The solid shank tapers out perpendicularly from the centre edge of the bow's straight loop. The rectangular bit is positioned flush with the end of the shank and in the same plane as the bow. It has two extant wards on the front edge although a third may have been lost to corrosion; with a further three let into the bottom e…

Object type: STIRRUP
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Heavily corroded forged wrought iron Medieval stirrup. The frame is approximately 126mm tall by 100mm wide and is in the shape of a convex-sided triangle with the apex at its attachment end. The straight tread-plate is inset by around 14mm up from the base. The sides are approximately 11mm wide and expand at the basal end via a linear taper just before the tread-plate to form 26mm wide rectangular side-plates. The tread-plate is the same width as the side-plates. The suspension loop attached to the neck at the apex has entirely corroded away. There is a dearth of information available…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Forged wrought iron late Medieval horseshoe. The shoe is 113mm wide by 127mm long with a length to width ratio of 1.12. There are three un-recessed and un-fullered rectangular nail holes visible on each branch of the shoe, only one of which penetrates through the full thickness. Pronounced calkins (7-8mm perpendicular deflection) formed by the bending of the iron plate survive on the heel of each branch. For the size of the shoe the web is quite broad (34.5mm). There has been much spalling of metal from the surface of the shoe due to corrosion and the lamellar structure of the iron, t…

Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Corroded, hand-forged Medieval to Post Medieval wrought iron Axehead. Straight top-edge with slight curve to the end of the narrow blade. The underside angles from the heel of the blade to the handle to form a tapering triangular shape, at which point it curves down to form a lug before rising again to the butt. Triangular eye-loop with slightly thickened butt-end. Extensive corrosion reveals the laminated metallurgy of the wrought iron, an axehead material largely replaced by steel during the 19th century. The size and modest degree of back-weight to the axehead suggests this is not …

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Iron single loop buckle, probably of Medieval date. The buckle is oval-shaped with a straight slightly narrowed strap bar. In cross-section the frame is rectangular and the strap bar is circular. The pin is also iron and has survived well, it has the form of a long tapering triangle with the pointed end resting on the frame loop and the other wider end looped all the way around the strap bar. Egan in his section on buckles in Clarkes book; The Medieval Horse and its Equpment 1150-1450 (2004) p55, infers that larger buckles from the Medieval period such as this one are likely to be mor…

Object type: CANNON BALL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast iron Post Medieval cannon ball with prominent middle seam. The ball has a diameter of 3.2 inches (81.3mm), a circumference of 10 inches (255mm) and weighs 4.5-4 lbs (1.5-1.82 Kg). The ball would have been used as ammunition for a 'Minion' or more probably a 'Saker' cannon, both of which were in common usage during the English Civil War. The Saker for example had a calibre of 3.25 inches with a barrel approximately 9.5 ft (2.9m) long. It had a range approaching 7400 ft (2.3 km) but was used to bounce shot along the ground to cause as much damage as possible. Circa 1650 AD.
