Object type: PLANO CONVEX KNIFE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Distal end of a Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age (2500-1500 BC) plano-convex knife. It is snapped at the distal end and roughly trapezoid in section with parallel semi-abrupt semi-invasive retouch down both edges and around the distal end on the dorsal face. It is made of medium to pale grey m,ottled flint with two patches of cortex covering c.10% of the dorsal face; one patch at the snap which may have caused weakness at this point and the other adjacent to it. It is 51.8mm long, 24.8mm wide and 9.3mm thick; it weighs 11.66 grams.

Object type: THUMB NAIL SCRAPER
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Thumb nail scraper of very late Neolithic to Bronze Age date (2500-1500 BC). The scraper is made from a small secondary flake stuck from a platform with a large bulb on the ventral face. The arises on the dorsal face suggest a multi-platform core. Small areas of cortex (less than 5%) arounf the proximal end and left edge (seen form the dorsal face). Long, parallel, semi-abrupt retouch around the distal end and distal part of the sides becoming shorter and stopiing near the proximal end. Some shallow, invasive retouch near the centre of the dorsal face. It is made on mid to pale grey m…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
One side and end scraper and one fragment of a scraper, probably later Neolithic to Early Bronze Age in date. Both tertiary pieces of knapped flint, mid to pale grey and mottled in colour.
Scraper: Flake struck off a multi-platform core with damage at the proximal end. there is retouch around the distal end and down both sides on the dorsal face. It is fairly irregular varying from short to long depending on the thickness of the flake, scalar to sub-parallel and abrupt to semi-abrupt. It is 31.5mm long, 28.3mm wide and 8.1m thick, it weighs 7.55 grams.
Fragment: Part of the side o…

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Three fragments of flint blades with retouch of later Mesolithic date.
1. Snapped middle section of a secondary blade. c.25% of the dorsal face is covered in cortex running down the right side. The distal end has a hinge fracture but at the proximal end the break seems to be from a retouched notch created in the left edge with short, parallel, abrupt retouch. A second, shallower, notch has been made in the middle of the left edge on the dorsal face, above the first, again with short, abrupt, parallel retouch. This suggests the blade was being worked to produce microliths. It is dark…

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Proximal end of a Portland chert blade probably dating to the Late Mesolithic (6500-3500 BC). The blade has a prominent bulb of percusison and was formed off a prepared platform. Parallel arises and percussion waves on the dorsal face suggest removal of parallel blades from the core. There are two retouched notches in one side; one by the break worked from the dorsal face and one half way down created from the ventral face. These suggest an attempt was being made to separate the proximal end and bulb of percussion (microburin) from the remainder of the blade. Medium to dark grey in co…

Object type: LEAF ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
About 80% of a leaf shaped arrowhead, missing the point to an old break, dating to the Early Neolithic period. Both faces are covered by invasive, shallow, parallel retouch done by pressure flaking. There are patches of cortex on both sides near the butt and a further patch in the upper corner on one side, in all about 15% of the surface. The break at the point is a hinge fracture suggesting an accidental break. The flint is mid grey flint with paler areas and mottling. It is 19.9mm long, 18.6mm wide and 3.2mm thick; it weighs 1.27 grams.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Incomplete knapped flint arrowhead dating from the Late Neolithic to Middle Bronze Age (c. 2500 BC - c.1150 BC). The arrowhead is formed from a large tertiary flake; the bulb of percusison has been removed by retouch although the percussion waves are clearly visible. It is symetrical and sub-triangular in plan with a broken point and a slightly concave but very thick base with what appear to be accidental breaks or possibly the unretouched side of the flake running across the base. The dorsal face has been completely retouched with shallow invasive retouch in the centre and more ab…

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Knapped flint barbed and tanged arrowhead dating from the Late Neolithic to Middle Bronze Age (c. 2500 BC - c.1150 BC). The arrowhead is bifacially worked and sub-triangular in plan. There are two round ended notches in the base, flanking the central tang with a barb at either side. All three are almost the same length; the tang is distinctly wider and slightly longer than the barbs. One barb is complete with a rounded tip and slightly concave outer edge. The other tank has a chip in the outer edge and a squarer end, which appears complete. The arrowhead has invasive shallow pa…

Medieval cast copper alloy brooch with part of the pin still attached. The small brooch has a square frame with a circular hole in the middle. One side has a constriction at the centre to hold the pin and the opposite side of the inner circle is worn. The pin has an oval head looped around the thinned section of frame. The loop ends in a square collar from which the circular sectioned pin projects; it is broken shortly below the collar with a corroded break. The surfaces are badly corroded, obscuring any decoration but traces of gilding survive on both sides. It is 17.0 by 16.6mm and …

Roman copper alloy irregular as of Claudius (41-54), Minerva reverse type, 43-60 AD.
The coin has been pierced with a worn, circular piercing near the rim at 5 o'clock on the obverse and 12 o'clock on the reverse.
Many copies of Claudian period asses were struck in Britain in the decades following the invasion of AD 43. This was because there was a serious shortage of small change for the up to 50,000 or so Roman soldiers in the Province to use. It is now reckoned that many of these coins were in fact semi-official, being struck at legionary bases such as Colchester. The "Mi…

Separate cast copper alloy knop from the side arm of a late Roman crossbow brooch. The solid knop is onion shaped with six facets and a small but prominent projecting terminal knop in the centre of the outer side. The knop tapers in towards a faceted collar at the base beyond which it narrows to an irregularly faceted, slightly damaged pin which is flattened at the end and would have attached into the hollow side arm of the brooch. There is no evidence of a screw thread on this pin. It is 9.7mm in diameter at the head and the head, collar and terminal knop are 13.2mm long; it is 25.2m…
