Gold posy ring, circular in plan and D-shaped in section, inscribed with the words in italics on the inside of the hoop: Sic unit Amor duo meaning 'Thus Love unites two' or more literally 'Thus Love makes two into one' (or one of two) with the mark of two interlocking hearts at the end of the inscription. The italic script has an inwards curving 'flick' at the top of the upright of the 'd' of duo. There appears to be a resurgence of Latin for inscriptional use in the 18th century with English being most common during t…

Roman or post medieval copper alloy ring, probably a finger ring with broken hoop and thick bezel. The hoop varies, thinning from a rectangular to a flat cross section on one side of the bezel and oval in cross section on the other. Part of this may be distortion caused when the hoop was bent and broken. The bezel is broadly rectangular with semi-circular ends flanked by rounded knops in each corner. It thickens towards the centre and is notably more thick near the base than the top where there is a flat edge with a step in thickness part way back. There are extensive file marks acros…

A gold finger ring with diamond setting dating to the medieval period. The ring has a square bezel the front of which rises evenly in a four sided pyramid the top point of which is formed by the four sided diamond embedded in the bezel. The diamond is probably a natural octahedra crystal and appears slightly grey in the setting. The four facets on the front of the bezel have horizontal striations from filing/hammering and are even in plane with the sides of the diamond. The sides of the bezel curve backwards, narrowing from the front to the flat back. The bezel connects directly int…

There are old breaks beyond the cuffs and any further design or inscription is lost. Large and heavy Roman gold finger ring of ‘keeled’ type with a wide openwork hoop and large ovoid bezel set with a dark blue/light grey oval nicolo intaglio. The lower part of the hoop is composed of a pair of six-sided polygons, each with a central rib and openwork panels on each side that slope downwards from the rib. The openwork consists of peltas, four in total, rather crudely executed. The polygons are not quite the same in style; where they meet they form a six-pointed star, with the angles left plain and unworked on one side but with the others indented to form a pa…
