A broken Post Medieval base silver halfgroat of Edward VI (1547-1553) in the name of Henry VIII dating to AD 1547-1551. No initial mark, probably minted at Bristol. North (1991,119) no. 1880. The coin has a large chip on its edge on the left when looking at the bust and a small section has broken off opposite this, along a probable crack as the break is patinated.

Description: A complete Post-Medieval silver hawking vervel. The vervel is flat in cross section and circular in plan, with a large, central circular aperture and slightly convex inner and outer faces. Both faces of the vervel are inscribed with italic script, reading: Returne to Gilbert . Hodey // * of Alscot ~ in Devon, the ~ appears to be a branch like filler. A slight change in the surface on both sides at 1-2 o'clock seems to suggest the loop was soldered closed at this point.
