An unusual porcine fitting of the insular La Tène tradition, probably dating from the 1st century BC to 1st century AD. It is possible this fitting is for a vessel, but it is so far unparalleled in type. There are two other ‘head’ fittings known (OXON-6E3722 and HESH-06696B), but they are very different in design, and this find does not appear to be related to them. The lack of the portrayal of tusks, a hint of a dorsal ridge and large, pointed, forward facing ears are not definitive enough to label this example a wild boar, and so it is classed as a porcine of mix…

County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A damaged copper-alloy object, presumably incomplete, of uncertain function and date. It is broadly tubular - hollow, with a square cross-section with rounded corners. At one of the shorter ends the 'tube' appears to have been pinched closed. At the other terminal the outer edge is slightly bevelled suggesting a finished end, though there is a small loss. Both sides feature small, broadly rectangular protruding tabs, nearer the probable original end. These are reminiscent of the loops on a miniature socketed axehead, but are off centre, aligned diagonally the one to the ot…

Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy strap-end probably of medieval date (c. 13th-15th century). It is formed of a copper-alloy sheet folded widthways; it has been slightly compressed and angled at the fold. The corners are also angled off at the fold. At the attachment end is a separate rivet, set centrally, to connect the two halves. Plain on the reverse, the front of the strap-end is decorated with a pair of transverse lines towards the attachment end, these overlain by an engraved cross in saltire. Such decoration appears to have been produced before perforation for riveting as the rivet interrupts it. …

An incomplete copper-alloy probable mount of uncertan date. The artefact takes the form of a thin, sub-oval plate of which perhaps around 50% now survives, assuming both ends are identical, which is not necessarily the case. The plate was perhaps of elongated oval form, with at least one somewhat squared off short end; indeed, only one terminal and is abraded. On the reverse of the mount is an integral rivet set centrally at the surviving short end. From this end the object gradually widens before narrowing again; it has broken in a sligtly jagged fashion beyond this widest point.…

A corroded and bent, but otherwise complete, post-medieval copper-alloy openwork bridle boss (c. 17th century). The boss is broadly heptagonal, umbonate at the centre and rises to a knop at the apex. It has a flattened border, only distorted through post-depositional damage. The central part, the umbo, is concave on the underside. The umbo is composed of a raised eight-pointed star with central knop. Between each arm of the star and close to the flat border there is a sub-triangular opening. A cast, copper-alloy post-medieval asymmetrical buckle dating to c. 1575-1700, incomplete insofar as it is missing its pin. One loop is broadly rectangular and the other loop is D-shaped. The inside of the D-shape loop has a pointed protrusion which could be where the pin rested. The pin bar is notably narrow, though the frame overall has suffered from corrosion, depriving us of much of the original surface and thus any decoration. The reverse of the buckle is flat. A openwork cast copper-alloy fragment, possibly from a vessel base of post-medieval date. The fragment is now broadly rectangular with numerous large perforations. It is curved in profile, the diameter extrapolating out at c. 140mm (approx.). It consists of two solid zones, above and below an openwork area. The lower solid zone is decorated by a longitudinally engraved line. It is thinner than the zone above, which is decorated by a pair of longitudinally engraved lines. A medieval to early post-medieval sheet copper-alloy strap-fitting of uncertain function (c. 15th-early 16th century). It comprises two, thin shield-shaped plates held together by two rivets, central on either side of a keyhole-shaped openwork on the back-plate; the front plate is solid. There is cusping at the top of the shield and also at the terminal, around the central point. The surfaces of the strap-fitting are apparently plain, though corroded. A very worn fragment from a cast copper-alloy vessel: a pot leg probably dating to the post-medieval period, c. AD 1500-1750. The leg is sub-circular to sub-rectangular in cross-section, tapering gradually, but consistently, from one to the other; it is very worn at the terminal through abrasion.
