Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
The upper half of a cast copper-alloy Roman Colchester derivative brooch (possibly Dolphin type) dating to the 1st century AD. The pierced semicircular lug is situated below the wings with a possible second lug above which has abraded through. Nothing of the axis bar or spring mechanism survives. The wings curve shallowly downwards. They are seemingly plain, though corroded and abraded at one of the wing tips. The broken bow has a tall central ridge flanked by less pronounced ridges on either side. It is broadly semicircular in cross-section, having a flat lower surface. It tapers to…

Object type: BELL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment from a post-medieval animal bell ('crotal') cast in copper alloy. It comes from the lower half of the bell, an area extending from one side of the sound slot, seen as a broadly straight edge. It is decorated with overlapping moulded semicircles forming a pattern known as 'fish scale'. The semicircles on the fish scale pattern decrease in size as they travel from the median seam end to the slot. The 'fish scale' decoration dates this crotal to the 16th or 17th centuries (Bailey 1995, 40-41; ref. 7), see also ref. HAMP-123118 on this database. It is now a light-grey colour …

An abraded base sherd possibly from a Roman vessel. It has an irregular shape. It is has a flat base with little sagging. One wall emerges at an angle of c. 140 degrees. The vessel has a light-grey interior but is an oxidised mid/light-orange colour on the internal surface, greyer on the base. It has fairly even shell tempering with some fragments up to c. 2.5mm long. It may be from the Roman kilns at Harrold, however a medieval date cannot be ruled out entirely.

A body fragment from an early Roman wide cuff, flat bracelet. The fragment is broadly rectangular, broken at both ends, bent upwards slightly at one. It is fairly flat in profile, with a rectangular cross-section. The terminal is finished with bevelling to its lower surface. The upper surface is decorated longitudinally along the body featuring a pair of double incised lines picked out with regular diagonal nicks (cf. Stead and Rigby 1986, 126; ref. 166). A corroded and damaged cast copper-alloy post-medieval double-looped buckle frame of rectangular form, incomplete in so far as it is missing its pin. The buckle is flat with bevelling to the upper surface internally and externally; the lower surface is flat and the pin bar therefore of trapezoidal cross-section. Viewed in profile the loops have been bent upwards at one corner dramatically; the pin bar has been bent downwards as well. Such buckles tend to be attributed a 16th-/17th-century date (see Whitehead 1996, 75). This artefact has corroded to a mid-green/brown colour with some p…
