Faustina II, sestertius, Rome. The reverse appears to show a female deity that cannot be identified with 100% confidence - probably Concordia, standing left, holding patera and cornucopia, RIC III (Ant. Pius) cf. p.191, Nos.1368, 1372. This would make it ca. AD145-61.

Object type: VESSEL
Broad period: ROMAN

A worn copper-alloy escutcheon/handle attachment from a Roman vessel probably dating from the 2nd century AD.
The curvature of the piece indicates that it would have been fitted to the rim of a circular-sectioned vessel. The object is roughly triangular with extremely worn edges and corners. There is a drilled perforation in the centre which looks equally worn. If it was decorated with moulded or incised decoration, this is no longer visible. The artefact is heavily corroded.

Object type: DRESS HOOK
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Published
Very possibly a middle Saxon or Carolingian copper alloy double-hooked dress fastener dateing from the 8th-early 9th century.. The hooks are conjoined by an integral sub-rectangular sectioned bar that is pierced by a neat, probably drilled, transverse hole, and is decorated with multiple transverse grooves, now rather faint through abrasion.
Sometimes identified as shroud hooks, such objects might also have been used as harbicks (havettes or shear-board hooks, implements to fix cloth during the sharing of the nap). See discussion in Hinton Hamwic 1996, 47-8. Examples from Norfolk…

An almost complete copper alloy medieval sword pommel, likely dating to c. 1300-1400 AD. This object is an example of a strongly developed wheel pommel, recorded as Type VIII in the London Museum Medieval Catalogue. This example is in good condition even though the sides are slightly torn and dented inwards. The pommel consists of two flat circular discs, which cascade outwards to connect to a flat, band circumference. On the upper portion of the band is the smaller perforation for the hilt. At the opposite side of the pommel is the larger opening, which has a small fragment missing…
