A worn copper-alloy escutcheon/handle attachment from a Roman vessel probably dating from the 2nd century AD. The curvature of the piece indicates that it would have been fitted to the rim of a circular-sectioned vessel. The object is roughly triangular with extremely worn edges and corners. There is a drilled perforation in the centre which looks equally worn. If it was decorated with moulded or incised decoration, this is no longer visible. The artefact is heavily corroded. Similar items were recorded under LANCUM-170546, BH-FB17E1 and ESS-874B53 and an excavated paralle…

A moulded rib flanked by a groove surrounds the aperture and another rib and groove mark the edge of the terminal on the front or upper face. Both edges of the handle proper are followed by a groove. There are large patches of iron staining/pan/corrosion on both the obverse and reverse of the han…

A cast copper alloy handle from a post-medieval chafing dish, dating from AD 1400 - 1600. The handle has a trapezoidal frame, broadly rectangular in section, with three concaved sides and three short sides, one very worn from where the attachment lug would have sat and attached it to the bowl/dish. The lug is missing. It would have been rectangular in section and is U shaped in plan, one end of the U flaring out into a rectangular collar before terminating in an integral recessed, circular rivet that attached it to the side of the dish. A number of handles of similar design are recorde…

Cast copper alloy vessel escutcheon dating from the Roman period, that is the 1st-4th century AD. The mount is solid cast, with a hollow back that was filled with white solder and thus attached to the vessel. There would have been another one on the opposite side of the vessel. The escutcheon is shaped like a human head, topped with a ring that would have held one side of the vessel's handle. The face has short hair, a snub nose, large eyes and large eyes and possibly horns, therefore suggesting it might be the depiction of the Roman God Bacchus who was the god of wine, merriment and …

It has two curved horns, eyes and a circular suspension loop attached to the top of the bull's head. The corroded remains of two iron attachments penetrate the mount at points just below the horns and in the centre of the terminal nostril / mouth area, with iron staining to the upper surface at both points. A late medieval to early post-medieval (1400-1600) cast copper alloy chafing dish handle, with complete handle and lug. The lug is circular and fully envelopes the handle, and is rectangular in section: it may have been hammered into shape around the handle. The lug has a stepped end and circular rivet where it would have been attached to the chafing dish. The handle resembles an inverted T with 90 degree corners, and is rectangular in section. It appears to have been bent on one side, causing the metal to break. The bottom bar is extremely worn and very thin. Similar examples dati…
