Object type: DIRK
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Cumbria
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Cast copper alloy dirk dating from the Middle Bronze Age, that is c. 1500-1300BC. The dirk is broken into five fragments and two rivets, but it is incomplete: the very tip fragment is missing and could not be recovered after intensive search. It may have never been deposited in the first place or else, possibly disintegrated in the ground. The remaining five blade fragments and two rivets survive in good condition. All breaks are clean and the fragments join. It displays much wear around the shoulder section, but there are two definite rivet holes and two 'cut-out's which probably hel…

Copper-alloy developed flat axehead dating from the Early Bronze Age, that is c. 2000-1900BC. The axehead survives in good condition with a very shiny, glossy surface and smooth patina. The surface is slightly pitted, but there is no sign of the later stages of bronze disease. The axehead is lenticular in profile, with slightly raised but not pronounced flanges. It does not have a stop ridge, but a very slight raised section across the centre. This is curved and made more visible but being undecorated above the 'ledge' and decorated below. The decoration consists of a untidy 'rain'…

Copper-alloy axehead dating from the Early Bronze Age, that is c. 2200-2100BC. The axehead survives intact and in good condition with some bronze corrosion coming through along the sides. Most of the original olive-green patina is still in place, but the surface is pitted with corrosion showing through. The axehead has curved, diverging sides with a curved, splayed cutting edge/blade. The butt is semi-circular and the the axe is lenticular in profile. The casting seams were removed and the axehead shows signs of repeated resharpening along the cutting edge (striations). It is decor…

Copper or copper-alloy axehead probably dating from the Chalcolithic/Copper Age or the very Early Bronze Age, that is c. 2400-2300BC. The axe survives in good condition with a rusty-coloured surface and rough patina. It has straight diverging sides, a straight butt and a gently curved cutting edge/blade. Its profile is flat lenticular and it is undecorated. According to Needham's Classification of Chalcolithic and Early Bronze Age Copper and Bronze Axe-Heads, this is most likely a Class 2B or 2C axe, dating from the 24th or 23rd C BC. Needham's classification is mainly based on axehea…

Early Bronze Age flat axehead, probably dating from the early 2nd mil BC. Small, very worn axe, probably of Migdale type or else, its Biggar Variant, with a slightly flattened butt and sides which are more parallel than those of Migdale axes. Surfaces very worn, undecorated. Comp. Schmidt and Burgess 1981, nos. 231-241. Ref: Schmidt, P.K. & Burgess, C.B. 1981. The Axes of Scotland and Northern England. Prahistorische Bronzefunde. A Late Bronze Age gold-plated copper alloy penannular ring dating from 1300-800BC. The ring is oval in shape and cross-section with a narrow gap between the terminals which are flat ended. One of the terminals has a chip of metal missing at the edge. The surface comprises of a bright gold colour and is possibly silver rich but there does not appear to be definitive bands of lighter (silver-rich) gold. There does not appear to be any evidence of a copper core and the weight may indicate it is more likely the penannular ring is made of gold, rather than gold plated copper-alloy. But non…

A small palstave or short/long flanged axe fragment dating from the Middle or earlier Late Bronze Age, c. 1500-1000BC. Only the blade and a small part of the lower body survive in good condition. The blade is slightly dented but was shaped and reworked and shows signs of use. The break from the main body is old. Due to the break being in the lower part of the body no traces of a stop ridge or flanges or wings can be made out and it is difficult to assign a type. A general Middle Bronze/earlier Late Bronze Age date is suggested.

Probably a late Middle Bronze Age to Late Bronze Age spearhead dating from c. 1100-800BC. The spearhead survives incomplete with the lower part of the socket missing. It had a wide circular socket and had a leaf-shaped blade and was probably of the leaf-shaped, pegged variety of Later Bronze Age spearheads which often found in Late Bronze Age hoards of metalwork in the South and East England. It is plain with very narrow wings, but overall in a good condition. It did not have a side loop/side loops but would have had two peg holes (one on either side of the socket) so secure the it to …

Hoard of seven early Bronze Age copper alloy flat axes with similarities to the Migdale-Marnoch tradition of the early Bronze Age, dating from c. 2200-1900BC. All are of early types and surface analysis undertaken at the British Museum has shown all to be of unalloyed copper with (unquantified) traces of arsenic, silver and antimony. Although they have somewhat corroded surfaces and a range of other minor damage, all are essentially complete objects. Their original outlines can be extrapolated with some confidence, thus allowing classification according to the latest scheme for sou…

Early Bronze Age flat axe probably dating from c. 2150-1700BC. Only the lower half of the axe/blade survives, the butt end is missing. The axe is narrow with tapering sides and there are no signs of a stop ridge. It has a flared cutting edge with concave shoulders. The axe is extremely worn and the original surface has now corroded away. There is a small possibilty that it was decorated, but judging from the slightly tapering sides it is probably an earlier flat axe (that is from c. 2150-1700BC) rather than a later one from the Migdale metalworking tradition. Incomplete copper alloy knife, or dagger. The dagger is leaf/pointed-oval shaped, slender and roughly a pointed oval in cross-section. Is it very thin (less than 0.5mm). On either side of the blade there are developed bevels; one on either side of the main ridge angling down towards the blade edge. The blade tapers towards the tip, which is now flat through wear rather than being pointed. The edge on both sides (and the tip) are extremely worn and covered in corrosive products. A nearly complete or possibly miscast copper alloy palstave dating from the Middle Bronze Age that is c. 1500-1150BC. This is a Group I: Primary Shield Pattern type (Schmidt and Burgess 1981). IT is almost complete, only the lower quarter, ie the cutting edge is missing. However, there is no clear break and the edge is rather rounded so it possible that this was, in fact, a miscast palstave. The sides of the blade are concave and taper to the middle of the axe. The stop ridge is positioned three-quarters of the way down from the blade, this is shallow with short and low flanged side…

Cast copper alloy palstave dating from the Middle Bronze Age, i.e. c. 1500-1300BC. It is part of the Taunton metalwork assemblage. The axe has two triangular flanges (diamond-shaped from the side) and with its small, worn semi-circular stop-ridge it could be related to the shield-pattern palstaves of the Acton Park metalwork assemblage to which it bears some resemblance. The axe is a heavy implement and complete with the two flanges and a very worn crescent-shaped blade with up-turned corners. It has a dull green/brown patina on the surface between the flanges, but is very pitted, wit…

Cast copper alloy palstave dating from the later Middle to the earlier Late Bronze Age, that is c. 1300-900BC. Only the lower half (blade) remains and suggests that this was a transitional palstave of Type Shelf (Penard/Wilburton metalworking assemblages). Only the half below the stop ridge survive, showing a widely splayed blade with upturned corners. The stop ridge is slightly curved and there is a vertical moulding centrally below the stop ridge. Surfaces on obverse and reverse are extremely worn and little of the original patina remains.

A miniature flat axehead, probably of early Bronze Age date (2150- 1500 BC). The object resembles a miniature version of the earliest and simplest solid cast copper alloy axeheads with tapering sides and rounded butts. Most of the upper sruface has broken away leaving a light brown corroded surface. The blade is incomplete due to a modern break, probably due to the plough. There are several smalle…
