Object type: CANNON BALL
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Derbyshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
While this object was initially described as a cannon ball there is no doubt that it is in fact a fossil sponge and dates from the Cretaceous period. These objects are flint and not uncommon in chalk areas of the country. The slightly irregular, spherical shape and the small scar are typical features. Any future finds should not be recorded.

Fragment of a hand-turned rotary quern, made from volcanic basalt lava probably imported from the Rhine area. Probably the lower stone. Includes the outer edge and the inner edge of the central hole (diameter c.40mm) which would have taken the spindle. The lower surface is pecked. The upper surafce is smoothed through use, although with numerous voids natural to the stone (up to c.15mm length). Outer edge slightly bevelled towards the underside. Mid grey with two large white inclusions visible in one of the breaks (6.8mm-9.2mm). Width c.200-210mm, thickness c.45mm, radius c.220mm, est…

Neolithic polished stone axehead fragment. From towards the butt end, but both ends broken and large flake broken off one surface (ancient damage). Spherical fossil sponge (called 'porosphaera', from the cretaceous period, 70-135 million years ago) with naturally occuring, slightly tapering, hole through it. Diameter c.78mm, diameter of perforation 12mm-10.5mm, weight 480.8g. Wear around the edges of the hole may indicate that this has been suspended at some point, although the wear is not in the same position at both ends - possibly just damage. Stones with holes through them are sometimes called hag stones and are thought to have amuletic powers, warding off withcraft/bad luck etc. This was found buried beneath the flo…

Stone sculpture; sandstone head. Orange-yellow fine-grained sandstone. Short hair, no fringe, cut around the ears, lumpy appearance as if thick and curly; there is a groove running from the front hairline just off-centre along the top of the head to the crown (possibly damage or meant to be a parting). Forehead has a bulge on the right and slopes downwards and inwards on the left. Simple oval eyes, now damaged, apparently originally undetailed. The nose is large, aqualine and broad and slopes to the right. The lips protrude slightly and have an upwardly curved groove between. The righ…

Mesolithic-Neolithic perforated object. Circular stone disc with central perforation. The perforation has a slightly "hour-glass" profile, although this is not marked (c.14mm narrowing to c.11.5mm at the centre). The stone does not appear to be quartzite, (the usual stone for these objects), but appears to be a very fine grained, apparently sedimentary rock (sandstone?), with some mica, a slightly orangey-buff coloured where fresh rock is exposed. There is an area of dark staining at one edge, with an associated shallow chip on one surface; there is also more recent slight damage arou…

Roman gritstone bust of human ?male. Neolithic polished ground stone axe, incomplete. Coarse grained igneous rock, probably diorite or a coarse grained dolorite, neither of which are found locally, so this must have been imported into the area. Both the butt and blade end are broken. The butt end, broken at an angle, may have been deliberately broken in antiquity, possibly for re-use as another tool. The blade end break is more uneven, and probably due to plough damage. Length 126.1mm, width 76m, thickness 41mm.

Sub-spherical with high-relief pointed projecting nose, simple pointed oval eyes with no detail modelled, and small, narrow, straight slashed mouth. No modelling of ears, hair or neck. White/cream coloured marble or limestone mortar. The vessel walls flare outwards from the base to the rim. The rim is flat on top, and has four equally spaced projecting lugs, all with rounded ends and tapering to join the outer wall about half way down it.
