Object type: BULLA
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Fragment of a cast lead papal bulla. It represents half of the bulla, althought the face of St Paul can be seen. The reverse has the letters 'V' and 'S' across the middle and a faint 'B' above. The faint Roman numeral at the base is unclear, but would refer to the pope represented by the bulla. This may be a bulla of Pope Urban, but without the numeral it is unclear to which pope and date this belongs. However, as a large number of bullae of Urban VI have been found in Britain, it could possibly belong to him. It can only be given a broad medieval to post medieval date.

County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead cloth seal. It is uniface, with a castle or gatehouse stamped on the face. This record was left unfinished and without a photograph. It is possible the castle or gatehouse is a portcullis. The portcullis was "the main design for alnage seals in the late Tudor period... and continued in use into the early seventeenth century" (Egan 1985, 9). Alnage seals indicated the cloth had been checked for quality by a Crown official and that the subsidy (tax) had been paid.
