Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Central Bedfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A worked flint implement, probably representing an unfinished Mesolithic microlith. The piece is roughly drop-shaped, with a clear bulb-of-percussion at the proximal end. Above this, the two blunted sides converge to a point. Opposite the bulb-of-percussion is what appears to be the start of a notch. The flint is light to mid grey and is slightly patinated. Length: 28.2mm; width: 20.4mm; thickness: 4.6mm; weight: 2.21g. This flint is part of an assemblage of microliths found at this location. Similar pieces are illustrated by Butler (2005: fig. 34, nos. 12 - 14).

A flint blade or microlith, dating from the Mesolithic period. The heavily patinated blade is of triangular section, flaring towards the distal end. Both the proximal and distal ends have been squared off, probably deliberately, in the former case resulting in the removal of the bulb-of-percussion. The sides have a serrated feel, possibly as a result of wear through use, and the lower part of one side has been blunted. The flint is a heavily patinated light grey. Length: 36.4mm; width: 9.9mm; thickness: 2.4mm; weight: 0.83g.

A Mesolithic flint microlith. This implement has been fashioned from a triangular-sectioned bladelet. Examination of the ventral surface indicates that the bulb-of-percussion may have been at the now-pointed end; the opposite end has been squared off. One side has been blunted along most of its length; approximately half of the other side has been blunted. The patinated flint is light bluish-grey. Length: 21.9mm; width: 5.5mm; thickness: 2.5mm; weight: 0.32g.

A Mesolithic flint microlith. The piece has been made from a blade. It has a bulb-of-percussion on the ventral surface and three longitudinal ridges on the dorsal. On one side the distal end has been deliberately blunted so that it angles inwards, terminating in a sharp point. In addition, there is a limited amount of retouch to the proximal end of the other side. The flint is light brownish-grey and is translucent. Length: 41mm; width: 13.1mm; thickness: 4.1mm; weight: 2.33g. This microlith, which is one of an assemblage of similar pieces, can be classified as Clark's Group …

A Late Mesolithic to Early Neolithic flint blade. The sub-rectangular blade is of triangular section, its thickness gradually increasing towards the damaged distal end. A bulb-of-percussion is visible at the proximal end of the ventral surface, adjacent to which there remains a small portion of the core platform. The sides have a serrated appearance, probably as a result of wear through use. The flint has a dark grey core and blueish surface patination. Length: 45.2mm; width: 8.6mm; thickness: 6.1mm; weight: 4.22g.

A flint blade of probable Late Mesolithic to Early Neolithic date. The blade is sub-rectangular, a natural flaw in the flint causing a right-angled projection at the distal end. Two vertical arrises on the dorsal surface create a trapezoidal profile. At the proximal end, there is a clear bulb-of-percussion beneath a portion of the core platform. Adjacent to this is what appears to be part of a second platform, suggesting that this may come form a multi-platform core. The flint is lightly patinated, transluscent grey and part of the cortex has been left on at the distal end. Leng…

A complete flint pickaxe, probably dating from the Mesolithic period (c. 10,000 BC to c. 4,001 BC). This would appear to be a double-ended implement, with a pick at one end and an axe-like blade at the other. Most of the surface of the original nodule has been removed, but one side in particular retains a significant portion of its cortex. The narrowest point is at the pick end, where the surfaces have been deliberately sloped to point, which exhibits signs of wear. The sides gradually diverge from this point, the implement reaching a maximum width approximately one third of the way…

A flint scraper of probable Late Neoloithic to Early Bronze Age date. The scraper has been made from a broad, irregular, secondary flake. A clear bulb-of-percussion and rippling are visible on the ventral surface, across which there runs a natural flaw in the flint. Approximately half of the perimeter shows evidence of having been retouched. The semi-abrupt retouch is confined to two of the rounded corners, where a number of parallel flakes have been cut through the cortex on the dorsal surface of the flake; an area of abrupt retouch links these two corners. The flint is mid greyish…

A Late Mesolithic to Early Neolithic flint blade. The conchoidally fractured blade is of sub-rectangular plan and its surfaces are a heavily patinated white. At least three longitudinal arrises are visible on the dorsal surface, interrupted at one point by a fossil inclusion, which has resulted in a step fracture. A small portion of the core platform remains at the proximal end, with an adjacent bulb-of-percussion on the ventral surface. The edges show no evidence of retouch. Dimensions: length: 45.1mm; width: 16.6mm; thickness: 8.4mm. Weight: 3.15g.

A Late Mesolithic to Early Neolithic flint blade. The blade is sub-rectangular in plan, the sides converging at what is probably the proximal end, which is slightly damaged. The piece is of triangular section along much of its length, with an angled flake removal at the distal end having created a wedge-shaped base. The surface of the flint is well patinated: the original colour is only visible at the damaged proximal end and also along a short length of the adjacent side, where the edge appears to have been retouched through the patination. A flint waste flake of probable Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date. The flint is a secondary flake, retaining part of the original cortex at the proximal end, where there is a bulb-of-percussion. The flake is roughly semicircular in plan and has a conchoidal fracture. At one point along the edge, there are four parallel flake removal scars, which are probably indicative of retouch. The translucent flint is repatinated in places, particularly on the ventral face. Dimensions: length: 32.6mm; width: 28.1mm; thickness: 7.5mm. Weight: 7.18g.

A flint waste flake of probable Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date. The flake is sub-triangular in plan and has a conchoidal fracture. Part of the core platform is located at the proximal end, with an adjacent bulb scar on the ventral surface. There is no evidence of retouch and the irregular edges are probably the result of post-depositional damage rather than utilisation. The flint is largely unpatinated, mid to dark grey with lighter mottling in places. Both the dorsal and ventral surfaces have adhering chalk. A flint tertiary waste flake of probable Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date. The flake is incomplete, the remaining portion having parallel long sides which then converge to a point. This point may be the result of a breakage rather than being an original feature; the other end of the flake also shows evidence of having been broken in antiquity. The dorsal surface exhibits two parallel arrises. The ventral surface has rippling but the striking point has been lost.
