A Mesolithic microburin which has been made from a tertiary flint blade. The sub-rectangular tool has several arises on its dorsal surface and clear rippling on the ventral. The upper edge has a straight break where the blade has been snapped; immediately below this are two diagonally opposing notches, possibly from another attempted snapping. The cutting of the upper notch has resulted in the production of a sharp point. A further notch has been cut at the opposite end to this point. The flint is a translucent light yellowish-brown. A copper-alloy mount, probably dating from the Late Iron Age to early Roman period and taking the form of a stylised zoomorphic head. A silver vervel of 'washer' type, inscribed on one side in italics *Edw.Lord.Mountague Vervels were small rings used in falconry, and were fixed to the birds jesses, the leather thongs that were attached to the bird's ankles. Conteporary treatises on the sport indicate that vervels sometimes served a functional purpose as a point of attachment for the leash. A retouched flint flake tool, probably dating from the Bronze Age to Early Iron Age. The secondary flake is sub-triangular and unpatinated, with a translucent, yellowish-brown colour. The ventral surface has a clear conchoidal fracture with pronounced bulb-of-percussion and bulbar scar, indicative of hard hammer production. Part of a Roman copper-alloy Colchester-derivative brooch, probably dating from the 43-175 AD. The piece represents the lower part of the bow, the foot and catchplate, with a well patinated break at the top. The bow is of triangular section and of equal width throughout. Two grooves decorate the upper surface, extending parallel to the right- and left-hand sides respectively, and there is a casting flaw just above the squared-off foot.
