Copper alloy weight, possibly for an apothecary. It is circular, 18mm diameter and 3.5mm thick, but with a rising central knob the head of which is 9mm diameter and giving the whole object an overall height of 10mm. The present weight is 0.2460 troy ounces: this is therefore probably meant for an assay weight of a quarter ounce, and is likely to be 17th century or later. The shape of the weight resembles that of the miniature weights used with scientific balance scales.

Small lead octagonal weight, probably for weighing coins or for an apothecary. It is 14mm long by 12.5mm wide, therefore sub-rectangular with the corner cut off to form an irregular or elongated octogon. Thickness 1.8mm. The edges are chamfered and the base is plain. The upper surface is divided into four quadrants, two (adjacent) containing three raised pellets and the other two containing each a single larger pellet. The resemblance to the triple pellets of the long cross coinage suggests strongly that this is a coin weight relating to coinage of the period c.1240-c.1480. Its weight …

A circular copper-alloy trade weight of saucer form, 25mm in diameter, with a greatest thickness of 4mm, the marginal rim being 2.5mm broad. The weight is 13.22g, that is 0.466oz, showing that it is intended for a half-ounce weight. The upper surface bears three struck assays or authorization marks. The sign of the ewer is shown at 6 o'clock: one shaped coarsely like a letter L (perhaps for London)is at 12 o'clock, and the third is clearly a Crown above the capital letter G. On this trade weight that apparently stands for one of the four King Georges 1714-1826 (before the 1826 Imperial…

lead weight of uncertain application, made from a piece of lead c30mm square and 4.5mm thick, with its corners trimmed off to form an irregular octagon. A single neatly circular piercing of 5mm gauge, countersunk on one (upper) side, provided a means of suspension.

Conical lead weight for the end of a fine line. The weight is 18mm in diameter at the base, and 9mm in diameter at the summit, which is cut off flat, or truncated. From base to apex measures 23mm, and there is a fine, narrow vertical hole running straight down the middle of the object. Weight 38.74g.

Post-mediaeval copper-alloy weight of circular, slightly taper-edged form and with a slightly raised rim, 25.5mm in diameter and maximum 4mm thickness (to rim), flat base, weight probably meant for half an ounce, though now 0.459oz. On the upper surface are visible a central circular indentation, as from a pin, and to one side a cross with a long stem. Another indent near it may be a crowned mark. This is probably a domestic or mercantile weight from a stacking set for normal scales, of the seventeenth or eighteenth centuries. It is somewhat corroded, perhaps suggesting the reasons for…

Conical lead weight of 26.83g, with a flat approximately circular base of c.18mm diameter, and straight tapered sides rising to an apex about 20mm above the base. There is a slight fracture at the summit suggesting that a loop or piercing for suspension has been broken off. It is possibly a fishing-weight, probably mediaeval.

Small quarter-ounce trade weight of bronze from a nest of weights or stacking series, 18mm in diameter and 4mm thick, the rim being 2mm broad all around the top. On the upper surface is stamped the sign of a ewer, which is the mark for a weight produced in London between 1590 and 1826. These are therefore the horizons for the production of this weight.

A weight or whorl of globular form with a central hole, apparently made of a ceramic material which now has the appearance of soft, whitish stone. The diameter is 23mm, the thickness 13mm, and the gauge of the hole 8mm. The object overall is subspherical and slightly irregular in form. It may be a spindle-whorl, but if so it is a very small one. If it had some other use as a pendant weight, it shows no sign of wear through motion against a string or thrum passing through the hole. the walls of the perforation are quite straight-sided.
