A rim sherd of a Vectis Ware vessel of Roman date (c. AD 43 – c. AD 150). Length: 60.1mm; width: 38.0mm and 9.4mm thick. Weight: 27.89g.
Probably a form 10 vessel with an everted rim, dating to the late first to early second century (Tomalin 1987, ‘Roman Wight: A Guide Catalogue’. 32 and 38). Approximately 12.0% of the rim indicates that the outer diameter of the rim would have been about 15.0cm. All the breaks are old. ‘Vectis ware is hand-made, well finished and relatively hard, being barely scratched with the fingernail. Its internal and external surface is partly reddish…

An incomplete cast copper alloy miniature two-handled vessel or flask of Medieval date (c. AD 1066 – c. AD 1300). Length: 46.3mm; maximum diameter: 39.0mm; weight: 39.61g.
The flask has an elongated neck, oval in cross-section, flaring towards a rounded base. Part of the base and side are missing due to post-depositional break. The neck flares slightly towards the plain rim which is sub-oval in cross-section and measures 21.2mm x 15.3mm. The foot is sub-triangular in cross-section with a slightly convex base and has an old break where the leg joined. The surfaces are covered with superficial copper alloy corrosion products. There are also deposits of a black substance which may be consolidated soot.
Cast cooking vessels seem to have come into use in the second half of the 13th century and to have continued at least until c. 1600 (Geake 2001, 52).

A complete cast copper alloy pouring spout in the form of a dog's head. Medieval to Post-Medieval (c. AD 1400 - c. AD 1550). Length: 63.0mm; thickness: 17.1mm; weight: 64.21g.
The dog's head is tubular and oval in cross-section and holds a circular-shaped object (about 4.0mm internal diameter) in its mouth from which liquid would have been poured. It is possible that the circular object represents a barrel. The dog's head is angular and robust. Its nose is short and slightly upturned, the nostrils being formed by scroll-like elements. The eyes have not been modelled. It has larg…

A complete cast or wrought lead or lead alloy container, possibly a 'bird feeder', of Late Medieval or early post-Medieval date (c. 1400 - c. 1600). The object is squashed and damaged. Originally, the rim was probably semi-circular in plan. The sides tapered from the slightly thickened rim towards the semi-circular flat base. Decoration just below the rim on the front convex face consists of a curvilinear tendril or foliate design within a border formed by two raised ribs. There is a bird within the tendrils. Below the border there is a third raised rib which is slightly more pronounc…

A cast copper-alloy Medieval to post-Medieval vessel leg (c. 1250-c. 1650). The object includes the foot and a small portion of the body. The leg is sub-triangular in cross-section and has rounded corners. On the upper part of the rear face of the leg it is slightly concave. The leg tapers in width and thickness from the top to the bottom. At the top the width and thickness are 30.8 x 30.2mm and at the bottom the measurements are 22.6 x 17.7mm. It has a bulbous foot, generally flat but uneven at the base. The base is 23.2mm wide and has a thickness of 26.0mm. At the top, the portion…

A body sherd of an unclassified Roman coarse ware vessel (AD 43-AD 410). The surface of the sherd is curved on both faces. It is dark grey/black throughout and is liberally tempered with rounded and crushed sand. This sherd was a surface find in sand and shingle within the inter-tidal zone. The sherd is abraded overall as a result of being in a mobile context. 43.8 x 30.4 x 7.3mm. Weight: 12.29g. It is possible that the sherd is from a Black Burnished Ware vessel.

A Medieval to post-Medieval cast copper-alloy vessel foot (c. 1200-c. 1700). The leg is 'D'-shaped in cross-section, flat at the rear. A transverse break at the top of the leg is old. Patches of a black substance on the front and back are probably consolidated soot. 29.1 x 20.0 x 12.8mm. Weight: 34.24g.
Crudely made cast copper alloy vessels were widely used from c.1200-1700 for serving and cooking. Butler and Green (2003: 15) state 'there is evidence that (cast copper alloy) metal cooking vessels became increasingly common during the 13th and 14th centuries'. Although earlier copper…

An incomplete Medieval cast copper-alloy right-angled drop handle (c. 1270-c. 1350).
One of the vertical shafts with its animal head terminal is missing.
The horizontal and vertical shafts are rectangular in cross-section (6.6 x 5.2mm). There is an acorn knop at each of the two corners where the shafts adjoin. At the centre of the horizontal shaft is a swelling, also rectangular in cross-section. This swelling is defined by a circumferential collar at each side. The surviving vertical shaft would have been at right-angles to the horizontal shaft. However, it is slightly misshapen. …

A fragment of a post Medieval stoneware rim sherd with a horizontal ridge. Possibly a Raeren-type, or possibly an Aachen-type (1300 - 1800).
A wheel thrown vessel. The fabric is hard fired with a grey core and brownish yellow inner and outer surfaces (Munsell Colour: 10YR 6/6). Above the ridge there is a line of impressed marks forming an abstract design that vaguely resembles letters. The distance between the rounded rim and the rib is 22.2mm.
