Silver coin. Sixpence of George III (1760-1820), probably 1817 issue, worn and probably used as a shooting target being indented on the obverse side. This might relate to widespread rural discontent in the period immediately after the end of the Napoleonic Wars, when a falling grain price led to price-fixing under the Corn Laws. The defacing of the Royal image was technically an Act of High Treason. Obverse description: bullnecked head laureate right. Silver strap end. A small cast rectangular box chape with a flat lug at its outer end and a rectangular field with the letter S in Gothic style viewed against a crudely cross-hatched ground on its display side – the ground having been executed as embellishment of the cast letter. The back plate is plain. A rivet of diameter 3mm and length 4.3mm passes through the box and attaches it to a textile strap which remains preserved within the chape and is now of a dull buff tint. The suspected age and material dictate the submission of this object to the Treasure process, ref. 2024 T336…

Silver disc. A small coin-sized disc – quite possibly a demonetised coin -  with both sides bearing  groups of parallel and individually incised lines, some lines and groups crossing others - possibly cross-hatched zones flank a plain central zone of lines running in one direction. This at least is the appearance of the outer side of a curled-up object; the inner surface appears similarly treated though lines become gouges here in a less tidy treatment. A detached chip was presented along with the main part of the object, though it does not entirely complete it. The pre…
