Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy buckle. Cast D-shaped or single looped buckle with an expanded bulbous outer edge and with devolved beast heads gripping the ends of the strap bar. The rather grim surface condition and the reddish-brown cast of the metal are typical features. The form is usually accorded an 11th-century date, though a group of buckles from what may be a Viking camp at Thonock, Lincolnshire, near Gainsborough, may date from an encampment of the earlier 10th century. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 900-1025 Length: 16.9mm, Height: 17.7mm, Thickness: 4.8mm, Weight: 3.55gms

Copper alloy pin. Cast round section shank of undifferentiated section except for its pointed tip, with an expanded tripartite or segmented head - possibly wrythen, a detail only becoming apparent when images were processed - with a groove, possibly to retain a lost inset of glass. Now bent double. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 850-950 Length: 31.4mm, Width/Thickness(?): 0.9mm, Weight: 0.93gms

Copper alloy mount. A thin straight-sided plate of possibly plano-convex section with incised linear decoration on its display side, plain on the flat back, with a rivet passing through a drilled hole towards one end. Bent and broken at the broader end, probably across a further fixing point and perhaps by rough removal from its setting. The source record suggests this could be 'an early medieval pin shank [probably]', an identification for which this reporter sees scant reason. Copper alloy possible sword hanger fitting. Cast plate in the form of a walking beast with long oval ears and gaping mouth with a body resembling that of a saddled dromedary camel behind, for the overall form cf. Weetch bird brooch Type 30.A. No trace of pin gear; the finder notes that Kevin Leahy opines a connection with a sword hanger. A slot and a drilled hole countersunk on the back appear, and may relate to such a function. The display side is decorated with two vertical rows of stamped marks and fainter rows appear across the neck of the creature. Suggested date: Early Medieval, …

A circular segmented or vermiform moulded feature is arranged as a presumably central norder around a lower centre with a hole pierced off-centre. Broken on all edges. Dave Haldenby kindly comments this is probably not Saxon. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 900-1000 Length: 26.3mm, Width: 22.8mm, Thickness: 4.7mm, Weight: 7.27gms

Copper alloy strap fitting. A short copper alloy bar decorated with four Borre style animal heads in plan view, one at each end and two creating side wings. Possibly a strap union, which is a known type. Dave Haldenby knows of several examples; of Anglo-Scandinavian style. The form is closely associated with Thomas Class B Type 4 strap ends and the related buckles. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 900-1000 Length: 40.2mm, Width: 18.3mm, Thickness: 4.7mm, Weight: 6.72gms

Copper alloy pin head. An almost-complete Middle Saxon pin head, described by the source record as sub-discoidal whereas the object now appears to be sub-triangular, with double collar. Shank lost. Multiple ring and dot decorates one side; reverse is plain and the upper edge appears reworked. This is perhaps due to damage where the metal is very thin and has resulted in a frilled edge. Similar large disc-headed pins are found on all East Yorkshire sites where a Viking presence is suspected, and on Anglo-Saxon sites far to the South. Copper alloy mount. Cast chip-carved mount with a thin layer of rust covering large areas but not obscuring the nature of decoration. The rust probably comes from the iron rivets which once attached the mount to an important object. The back is plain. This is probably from an ecclesiastical context [cf. Whitby parallels] such as a book cover or a shrine. Another part of the same object was reported from Melton Ross, making this a ‘find of note’ for its significance in tracking the members of a single Viking raiding party. An accompanying text extract suggests an ‘8th …

Copper alloy probable stirrup mount. A tapered plate with rounded ends, flat behind for attachment to another object, and with a zoomorphic motif moulded on its display side. The finder kindly notes a dragonesque creature may be represented, though whether the neck of the beast curves to define the central hole with gaping jaws and a protruding tongue completing its enclosure, or whether the hole itself represents an eye, is uncertain to this reporter. A reddish tint to the metal may also often be a feature of Anglo-Scandinavian metalwork. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 1000-1100 Len…

Lead spindle whorl. Cast or mis-cast plano-convex whorl with an off-centre moulded aperture of diameter 12mm, Walton Rogers form A1. The hole is enlarged on the flat side, perhaps by the abrasive action of a line passed through the hole. Patinated overall. The spindle hole size could admit an Anglo-Scandinavian date while the damage at the hole might hint at conversion of a whorl to a line weight.
