Gold pendant. A folded and crumpled discoid plate, plain on the back which is the exposed part, but with a series of flattened twisted wire loops of length 3mm passing beneath larger bosses on its display side, the latter features perhaps formed as hemispherical half-beads equipped with channels to permit the passage of the strands. An outer order of conjoined loops is discerned, with an indeterminate continuation of similar motifs on the obscured part of the pendant. Lead probable spindle whorl. Cast cylindrical whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 9mm, Walton Rogers form B. Eight deep symmetrically distributed cuts radiate from the hole on the lower side [as cast – perhaps the upper side as used]. Though tidy enough to be deemed decoration, such features are actually rare on whorls of this simple form, and so many such cuts are perhaps an unparalleled feature. Objects of this form and construction were reported from high status occupation at Middle Saxon Flixborough in a location beside the River Trent and may have been used to weight fishing or wildfowling nets.
