Lead alloy possible brooch fragment. Cast fragment, possibly from the centre of a disc brooch with concentric decoration, cf. Weetch Type 5. A circular segmented or vermiform moulded feature is arranged as a presumably central norder around a lower centre with a hole pierced off-centre. Broken on all edges. Dave Haldenby kindly comments this is probably not Saxon. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 900-1000 Length: 26.3mm, Width: 22.8mm, Thickness: 4.7mm, Weight: 7.27gms

Lead alloy brooch. Cast disc brooch or pendant. Openwork in each quadrant forms an expanded arm cross at the centre of which is a solid disc with a beaded border surrounding radial linear decoration. Lead alloy possible brooch fragment. A small part of a flat cast disc brooch, perhaps approaching 40mm in its original diameter, with a double lined outer border confining a design including a pellet and an associated petal or loop, possibly part of a more extensive interlace design. The proposed function may be supported by a trapezoid tab on the back, perhaps a relict of fastening gear. Possibly comparable to the East Anglian series of Viking-Age lead brooches. Patinated. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 900-1000 Length: 29.5mm, Width: 25.5mm, Thickness: 1.6mm, Weight: 7.85gms

Lead alloy possible brooch fragment. Cast plate with three concentric ridges around a flat central boss; the intermediate ring also marks the site of a similarly moulded projection on the back which borders a central hollow. Possibly a disc or plate brooch of Weetch Type 5, which was a cheap Anglo-Scandinavian type. Against this proposed identification, there is no evidence for pin gear. Now in two parts, probably broken at the time of discovery. Suggested date: possibly Early Medieval, 900-1000 Diameter: 30.1mm, Thickness (at ridge): 4.8mm, Weight: 9.46gms

Lead alloy brooch fragment, as kindly identified by the finder. Cast or mis-cast head of a small long brooch with head of cross potent form, and with rust around the stub of a lug on the back suggesting the former presence of an iron pin mounted behind the head. Fiercely abraded, and possibly partly melted; a small [length 12mm] fragment broke away during examination, probably a sad relict of the upper part of the bow. This may have been an object intended to substitute for a ‘real’ or working copper alloy version, perhaps used to close or complete an Anglian burial costume. The e…

Lead alloy crucifix. Cast cruciform plate with the body of Christ appearing in identically moulded relief on both sides. The face is modelled schematically with elongated oval eyes, a large nose and a slit mouth. A triangular arrangement above the head, on the cross, has four sunken dots along each of its angled sides and may represent either a mitre-like crown or the 'charge sheet' script in which Jesus was described as King of the Jews. Three prominent dots standing proud represent nipples and navel, with the ribcage also emphasised. The arms are outstretched with enlarged splayed f…

Lead alloy game piece, as kindly identified by the finder. Cast sub-rectangular concavo-convex object with a central ridged mould line; a small projection from this is perhaps a stub of casting sprue. Patinated overall. The shape now resembles a miniature bread loaf of modern type, perhaps as the result of crushing. One side is also indented, probably again as a result of adventitious damage. This object was found close to a castellated playing piece (NLM-7ABE36) considered to be for the game of Tafl, and the size and form of the two objects is so similar as to suggest they come from …

Lead alloy game piece, as kindly identified by the finder. Cast concavo-convex conical counter with four knops on its top modelled in bold relief and connected in a cruciform pattern by low ridges. The sides and top of the object bear traces of a dark blue-grey colorant which, if not an adventitious effect of soil conditions, might relate to the distinction of the piece for a two player game. A domed form is typical of pieces for the board game Hnafetafl, which was played in both Anglo-Saxon and Viking contexts. The 'king' was distinguished from the other pieces which defended or purs…

One side of the plate is decorated by moulded 'fleshy' foliage of the Winchester style, possibly inhabited by birds - the best candidate observed by this reporter has a fan-shaped tail and stands facing the centre with its leg pointing to the adjacent belt end of the plate. The other end of the plate is worn and probably lost. Though the style is Anglo-Saxon Thomas observes examples come from Viking York, and the imitation of better jew…

Lead alloy disc brooch with Jellinge-style decoration, . Cast circular plate with paired lugs for a separate pin (lost) opposite a folded catch plate. The front of the brooch bears a zoomorphic design comprising an entwined serpentine body with (probably) scales denoted by billeting; a head with elongated jaws and a large eye at the edge of the brooch; and at least two claws or talons. Patinated overall. The brooch would have appeared silvery when new, and is of a class of cheap jewellery considered especially significant because it marks the settlement of humble Viking folk. Lead Alloy brooch. Cast disc or plate Brooch. The display face bears a design of fine lines and pellets in relief, comprising a central pellet, a pellet with a nimbate border above it and one triangular group of radial lines opposite, flanked by two groups of circumferential lines edged by an upper laddered border. This schematic motif may represent a spread eagle, or perhaps a human figure in a gown with arms aloft; the size would make it possible that this motif was intended to resemble an early medieval gold coin. The reverse bears a pair of aligned loops with a drilled aperture of…

Lead alloy and glass probable brooch fragment. Cast disc brooch with an irregular central inset of (now) brick red glass. Faint traces of further textured decoration appears on what is now worn to a plain field. The edges of the object are damaged, probably recently, about two thirds of the way around the circumference of the plate. Separate fastening gear or attachment loops are now lost. Lead Alloy Possible finger ring fragment. Cast segment from an annular object of ovoid section of estimated internal diameter 30mm, expanded towards its putative bezel. Probably Lead alloy Possible mount fragment. Cast rectangular plate with crude interlace limited by a border running parallel to the opposite edge; interlace may continue beyond this internal border, though the rest of the object is lost. The finder suggests an identification as a brooch, and the decoration does indeed resemble that of cheap lead alloy metalwork for the less discerning Viking Age patron. However, such brooch forms tend to the curvilinear rather than rectilinear, while the construction is rather crude and massy for an earlier Anglo-Saxon brooch. An alternative identi…
