Object type: PENANNULAR RING
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Description: Penannular circular ring of late Bronze Age date, apparently made of gold throughout. The ring is almost circular in cross-section, with a flat facet around the interior. The ends are cleanly made across the thickness, forming a straight narrow gap 1.8mm wide at most. The ends are neat and flat, but cracked slightly implying that the gold may be a thick plating over a core of different material. The ring flares slightly in thickness, from 4.2mm wide and 4.8mm thick at the ends to 4.6mm wide and 5.1mm thick in the centre. The gold is an even co…

Description: Length of thick gold wire of circular cross-section, with a fresh granular break at one end and roughly rounded at the other (possibly an old break). It is curved along its length, forming about half of a circle about 35mm in diameter. The outer surface of the curve is smooth but the inner has slight longitudinal facets, as if hammered to shape.  It is slightly crushed and bent at the rounded end, and the damage has caused cracking to the metal here. Dimensions: Unbent length 50mm, bent into half-circle measuring 32.1 x 37.9mm. Diameter of rod 4.1…

Above this, the sides are.covered with seven or eight rows of small raised rings or annulets, forming circular indentations alternating with lozenges. Description: Gilded silver finger-ring of 16th-century date. The hoop is a low D shape in cross-section, and is gilded on both the flat interior and the curved exterior. The exterior is decorated all the way around the hoop with a series of discontinuous broad oblique grooves, each flanked by a narrow groove to either side, forming a zig-zag. The spaces above and below are filled with closely spaced and very neat rows of pellets, giving an effect often known as 'brambled'; the rows are set parallel to the oblique grooves. Description: Fragment of silver finger-ring. About a quarter of the hoop survives, comprising one gradually flaring shoulder with gently rounded edges, broken at the bezel. Next to the neat transverse break the metal is very thin, and is decorated with two transverse rows of ribbing. Next to this is a trapezoidal thickened area at the curve of the shoulder, divided into lozenges by criss-cross grooves; there is a neat, tiny cross stamped or engraved at the centre of each lozenge. Description and Dimensions: Small gold object, probably a tiny medieval finger-ring. A flattish pyramidal bezel 5.5mm square, with a very slightly concave reverse and a 1.5mm diameter circular indentation at the apex, forms the decorative centre. The opposite edges each have a very short flaring projection. 2.5mm wide and perhaps 0.7mm long. From the centre of each of these emerges a thin strand of gold, one longer (1.0mm x 0.7mm at the break) and the other much shorter (1.2mm x 0.8mm at the break) which would presumably have joined. The longer strand is bent, but was perhaps original…

Description: Gold pendant, of roughly circular shape, made from small pieces of gold sheet soldered together. The centre is formed of a square foil collet set set upon a base of spiral-coiled gold wire and set with a stone, probably a rock crystal. Around this were originally four similar rectangular collets set with what are probably garnets, forming a cross shape. Copper alloy figurine of a horse, probably originally part of a horse and rider statuette. The animal is captured in the form of prancing forward with its left leg raised. Its oversized neck and head are well-modelled but damage and corrosion have removed most of the detail, including the ears. The mane is clearly defined with a marked longitudinal rear groove. The figurine is much damaged, missing the right foreleg, the lower portions of both rear legs and the tail. Length, from base of tail to tip of muzzle, 61mm, weight 74.45g. Two silver groats of Henry VIII's 2nd coinage found approximately 175m apart. These are rare as stray finds and the condition of each, of reasonably bright metal and with hardly any scratching implies these two coins are from the same ploughed out deposit, whether purse loss or hoard. One (or both) has travelled some distance from the original group but, on the balance of probability, these two coins went into the ground together and so qualify as Treasure. The coins have little wear and a terminal date for the group probably lies between circa 1535 and 1544 when Henry's 3rd issue of d…
