Two copper alloy nummi fund very close together and from a point very close in time to one another. They are surely part of a purse loss or hoard and thus went into the ground together. However, as they are of copper alloy and there are ess than ten of them they do not constitute a case of Treasure. One might speculate that they were lost in the first years of the fourth century, probably c.AD300-10. 1) Copper alloy nummus of Galerius as Caesar, London, reverse GENIO POPVLI ROMANI, mintmark -/-//-, Cloke, Toone & Marsden 1.02.004, die axis 6, weight 6.72g, c.AD296. 2) Copper…

Two gold aurei of Augustus, addenda to a hoard now numbering eleven coins. Coin 10 was found on 8th August 2021; coin 11 was found on 29th January 2022. Catalogue: 10. Gaius and Lucius type, reverse showing the emperor's two grandsons who predeceased him (RIC I, no. 206, mint of Lyons). Weight 7.80g, date 2 BC to AD 4. This coin has a similar peck to the obverse field in front of the emperor's face to the other nine coins, surely a check mark to ascertain it was not a copy.   11. Augustus, aureus, reverse showing eagle grasping wreath (RIC I, no…

Four silver denarii scattered over a small area. The wear patterns are consistent with all of the coins being part of a hoard or purse loss that went into the ground together, at some point at the very end of the 2nd century or early in the 3rd, c.AD195-220 1. Vespasian, Rome, obverse [...CAE]SAR[...]VESPASIANVS AVG (anticlockwise), laureate head right, reverse [...], female figure seated left, very heavily worn and further details illegible (cf RIC 772ff), AD69-79. 2.41g. 2. Hoard of fourteen copper-alloy nummi of the House of Constantine. The original twelve were found on 31st December 2019 within two metres of the ten-figure grid reference. All date to the period 330-5, and they clearly represent part of a dispersed hoard or purse loss. Since these coin types seem to have been demonetised in 348 we can date the loss or deposition of these coins to the period c.330-48. Two additional nummi, found subsequently (2nd and 28th Sep 2020) in the same area, and addenda to the group of twelve, have been added to the end of this record; the Treasure number (…

Two quarter nobles found very close together. One is of Edward III, the other of Henry V. They surely represent part of a hoard or purse loss. Some wear as well as scuffing is evident and we might suppose a date of loss or depostion at some point in the mid-15th century. Catalogue Edward III, quarter noble, Treaty Series, North 1243, weight 1.44g (clipped), 1363-9 Henry V, quarter noble, Class C, North 1382, weight 1.72g, 1413-22

Two silver groats of Henry VIII's 2nd coinage found approximately 175m apart. These are rare as stray finds and the condition of each, of reasonably bright metal and with hardly any scratching implies these two coins are from the same ploughed out deposit, whether purse loss or hoard. One (or both) has travelled some distance from the original group but, on the balance of probability, these two coins went into the ground together and so qualify as Treasure. The coins have little wear and a terminal date for the group probably lies between circa 1535 and 1544 when Henry's 3rd issue of d…

Description: Two aurei of Augustus found in the same area as six other coins recovered previously (2017T827, NMS-297275) and representing an addendum to that group. Each carries a peck mark on the obverse, similar to the peck marks noted on the other coins. The pecking would have been carried out to check that the coins were of gold and not plated forgeries. Date: The lack of any coins of Tiberius implies that this hoard was assembled in the early 1st century AD, probably in the first two decades of the century, in the late Iron Age, and well before the Roman Invasion of AD43. Late Ir…

Two silver groats, one of Henry VII and the other of Henry VIII. These are rare as stray finds and, on the balance of probability these two coins entered the ground together, whether as part of a hoard or purse loss. Neither show very much wear and they were probably lost or deposited in the early 1540s before Henry VIII's debased 3rd coinage issue drove the earlier coinage of good silver from circulation. 1) Silver groat of Henry VII, Tower mint, North 1747. Two silver shillings of Edward VI, base silver profile issue, found very close together and undoubtedly part of a hoard or purse loss. Edward VI shillings are rare as stray finds and the presence of two in such a small area makes it almost certain that these two coins went into the ground together. They exhibit some wear but they are also weakly struck and, given that Edward's debased coinage was not in circulation for very many years, unlikely to have been lost or deposited much after c.1560. Description: Five silver short cross pennies of Henry II to Henry III found very close together. Two pennies of Henry I found close together. They are successive issues, one a PAX type and the other an annulet and piles type. The rarity of Henry I coins as stray finds together with the closeness in date strongly implies that these two coins went into the ground together, either as part of a hoard or purse loss.
