Fragment of a Neolithic polished axe, badly damaged in anquity only part of one face and one side surviving. Flaking around the cutting edge suggest that a crude attempt was made to resharpen the axe after breaking. Pointed oval section with facets down each edge. The implement is now fully recorticated making it difficult to describe the flint although it appears to be of mixed colour. Neolithic date. Length 103mm, Width 51mm, Thickness 30mm, Mass 161.9g

Object type: HAMMERSTONE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Flint hammerstone made from a keeled flint core. This bears areas of the original cortex on both of its sides and is recorticated, the flint appears to be mixed grey and opaque. The core was used for the production of wide flakes with knapping taking place on each side to produce the 'keeled' core. It is also possible that this object had been made for use as a 'chopper'. Use of the core as a hammer is evidenced by band of battering which runs around the crest of the keel. Length 86mm, Width 70mm, Thickness 48mm, Mass 292.5g

Object type: TRANCHET AXEHEAD
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Published Find published
This object resembles a small handaxe and it might be interpreted as a Late Neolithic 'ovate'. However, there are indications that the object represents the truncated remains of a Mesolithic tranchet axehead. Its section, with the broad edge being sharpened and the pointed end blunt, is the reverse of what would be expected on a Late Neolithic ovate. It is not recorticated and the worn state of its surface suggests that it pre-dates the late Neolithic. The flint is opaque and mixed buff and light brown. Sharpening was not carried out by means of the removal of tranchet flake but by re…

Hammerstone made from a flint nodule, no cortex present but one face and one side appears to be natural and unflaked, all surfaces are recorticated, covering what appears to be a poor quality flint. The implement.has a roughly rectangular section and the flaking, where present, is coarse. The aparent 'tranchet' flake on the narrow end is natural. On the other, wider, end, is small battered area showing the object to have been used as a hammerstone. It is not, on the basis of its shape, possible to suggest any previous function. Mesolithic tranchet axe made from a flint nodule, cortex present on one end and on a small area of the side, the other surfaces are covered by light recortication, over an opaque, grey, flint. The general section is lozenge shaped, the flaking is coarse, bifacial flaking. The cutting edge appears damaged but was formed by the removal of single flakes on both faces; the eponymous 'tranchet' flakes.
