Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A Post Medieval gold finger ring. A posy ring with the internal inscription Let vertue be thy guide in italic lettering. There is no maker’s or other mark. The hoop has a D-shaped cross section and is slightly distorted into an oval shape.
Dimensions: 21.70 mm x 2.25 mm x 0.80 mm

This inscription is common on rings from the later 17th to mid-18th century. Judy Rudoe of the British Museum has noted that in the absence of a makers mark there is insufficient evidence to confirm that the ring was over 300 years old when fond in 2021 (pers comm 18/11/2022).
