A flint axehead. A flaked axehead. Made on a nodule of pale grey-brown flint, now patinated to matt off-white and with iron staining along the flake ridges. Flaked on both faces from the edges, butt and cutting edge. All the cortex has been removed. The side edges are largely straight. It has a wide, slightly convex, cutting edge formed by flake removals from the edge into the body of the axehead. The axe tapers to the butt and has a lentoid cross section. There is some slight damage to the butt. Date: Neolithic - c. 4000 to 2350 BC Dimensions: 118 mm x 60 mm x 27&n…

An incomplete ground and polished stone axehead. Cornish Group I. The surfaces are heavily weathered and quite rough. It has a transverse break across the body and only about half of the axehead remains. The cutting edge is not present. It tapers gently to a slightly rounded and asymmetrical butt. One side has a slight ridge, the other is faceted. It has an elliptical cross section. Date: Neolithic - c. 4000 - 2350 BC Dimensions: 95 mm x 56 mm x 31 mm Weight: 263 g Mik Markham carried out a macro examination of the material of the axehead and noted the following: The material…

A ground and polished axehead, Mik Markham has identified the material as granite. It is crystalline and medium grained. Pale green in colour, the grains include quartz, feldspar and a few iron minerals. The surface is pecked and not deeply polished. It has a tapered and pinched butt. The sides are flattened. The faces are both convex and taper in to the narrowed cutting edge. The profile at the cutting edge is slightly asymmetrical. There is an indentation in the centre of one face which may be deliberate. Date: Neolithic Dimensions: 148 mm x 58 mm x 41 mm Wei…

A flint axehead, probably a roughout for polishing. A bifacially flaked axehead made on a partially naturally fractured tabular nodule of mottled, opaque, brown-grey flint with a paler beige patina. There are areas of cortex and sub-cortex on both faces, but substantially less on the naturally fractured face. The worked face has multiple semi-invasive flake removals at the cutting edge and along the sides. The other, naturally fractured face, there is some more haphazard flaking, perhaps aimed at thinning the body and creating a viable striking platform. It appears …

A flint axehead, probably a roughout for polishing. A bifacially flaked axehead made on a tabular nodule of mottled, opaque,  grey flint with a paler grey patina. Vestigial areas of cortex and subcortex remain on both faces , particularly around the edge of the butt. The cutting edge is unfinished and has some post-depositional damage. It was probably squared and was formed by long, invasive, longitudinal flaking. Vestigial areas of cortex and subcortex remain on both faces. The cutting edge is unfinished. It is crudely rounded with some short, longitudinal flaking to create the edge. This has been unsuccessful in removing a steeply angled facet on one face which would preclude use of the axehead in it's existing form. The sides of the axehead are tapering from the cutting edge to the thinned, rounded butt. The flakin…

A large flint blade flake. An elongate flake of light brown-grey opaque flint with sparse mottles. The surface has some light, semi-matt patination. There is an area of thick nodule cortex at the distal end. At the proximal end is a narrow striking platform with a low, diffuse bulb of percussion on the ventral face. The bulb develops into wide, low waves of percussion to the distal end of the ventral face. The dorsal face has two, large, parallel flaking scars from previous blade removals. These retain off-white nodule cortex. This object is probably prehistoric, but such stones have also been found in later contexts (e.g. Roman) and it is difficult to be certain of the date.
