Object type: COIN
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Surrey
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A silver plated contemporary copy of denarius of Tiberius (AD 14-37), dating to the period c.AD 14-37 (Reece period 1). PONTIF MAXIM reverse type depicting a female figure (Pax or Livia) seated right holding vertical sceptre in right hand and branch in left. Prototype of the mint of Lyon, cf. RIC I (2nd ed.), p. 95, no. 30. This type of coin is often referred to as the 'Tribute penny' of the bible (Matthew 22:17-21), although it is perhaps more likely that what was being referred to in the biblical account was a Roman provincial silver coin struck in one of the eastern mints.

Copper alloy heraldic harness pendant with traces of gilding and enamelling. Lozenge shaped, with a tripartite lobe (fleur de lis or shell) extending from each of the four straight sides. The shank is long, with the loop missing. The pendant still retains traces of gilding on the lobes, the shank and edges. The heraldry is too damaged to interpret, but seems to have had a background of red enamel. The only visible feature is a three point label of a dark colour (possibly blue) at the top of the lozenge.

Copper alloy medieval key with missing bow and damaged ward. A large piece has been cut from the shank, but this was probably done once the key was discarded. A conical hole has been bored into the end and has ring like decoration where the shank joins the bow. The remains of the ward are in keeping with 'type VI'. The remains of the bow suggest that it was of quatrefoil form.
