A near complete copper alloy acorn shaped harness mount of Post Medieval date (likely 17th century). The mount is made of slightly domed rounded sheet with two integral spikes projecting from the concave reverse. The spikes are bent to secure them to the harness. The mount is in the form of a stylised acorn in low relief, with slight cross hatching on the cup and a moulded stalk. The mount is missing the usual projecting knop from the tip of the acorn, which has broken off. Cf. IOW-09FB82, FAKL-965295. Length: 35.5mm Width: 22.3mm Thickness: 6mm Weight: 7.43g

An incomplete copper alloy bar harness mount with central and terminal lobes of Post Medieval date. The integrally cast mount has a central domed oval lobe with a moulded collar separating it from a round lobed terminal at one end. A large bent spike projects from the reverse of this lobed terminal. The other end terminates in a break, and likely once continued to a symmetrical lobed terminal with a second spike. A cast copper alloy bar mount with a central lobe and non-integral rivets of medieval date (c. 1150-1450 AD). The mount is cast in one piece, with a central domed lobe decorated by three transverse grooves. The reverse of the central lobe is concave. The two terminal lobes are slightly rounded, with circular 2.2-2mm rivets fixed flush with the front of each lobe, projecting slightly from the back.  No’s. 1160 and 1161 in Egan and Pritchard (2002, pgs. 213-214, plate 134) are very similar in form, although with different decoration. The object has a dark patina with encrustin…

A possible piece of copper alloy decoration, post-Medieval in date. This object is made from a rolled piece of copper-alloy sheet, soldered in place. It is unclear what purpose this would have had other than for decoration, as it is too delicate to be used as a hook and clearly used to be attached to a large piece.

A complete but worn copper alloy strap fitting or belt mount of probable Post Medieval date (AD 1500 to AD 1700). The general shape is a pointed oval, possibly a leaf shape or an elongated acorn. The front of the mount is convex, and the reverse concave. The surface of the front of the mount appears corroded or encrusted, so the decoration is unclear. There are visible traces of black or green paint. The reverse is undecorated. On the reverse, there are two rectangular, tapering lugs, both left quite short where they have broken off. The lugs are set an an angle to the centre line…

Cast copper alloy stud or tack, sexfoil in plan with moulded decoration in the form of a three-layered fleuret with six small petals around a central circle and then six larger petals emanating from these and alternating with six lobed leaves within six arches that are meant to represent more petals underneath, alternating with six knops which form the border at the edge of the stud. The corroded base of shank on the back of the stud may be the remains of a separate iron rivet as it is covered in iron corrosion product so it is hard to see if this is another piece of metal as most of …

Cast copper alloy hooked mount with a bifid terminal at one end and an incurving hook at the opposite end and a moulded rosette in the middle with a central extant iron rivet. Read (2001) illustrates a similar hooked mount with a moulded rosette on the central plate, that was used for suspending a sword scabbard, on page 42, fig.25, no.360, which is dated from the 17th century. An Early Medieval cast copper alloy mount, possibly from a harness or bridle fitting. The mount is circular in shape with an openwork design, possibly in Borre style, and therefore possibly dating from approx AD875-975. The diameter of the circular part of the fitting is 34mm and it has a thickness of 2mm. The reverse is flat with a central lug that flares out toward the base appearing to…

Cast copper alloy hooked mount, probably from a sword belt or baldrick, with an integral hook and two separate iron rivets. Below the hook is a transverse collar which then expands slightly into a pear-shaped form with a rounded bifid terminal. There are two iron rivets that run vertically in the centre of the mount which have mostly corroded into iron oxide, now present all over the back of the mount. leaving one of the rivet holes exposed, which is 1 mm in diameter. Dark green patina survives well on the upper surface, where it is free from iron oxide. The hook is missing its pointe…

A copper-alloy mount of probable medieval to post-Medieval date. The central portion of the mount consists of a vertical bar of D-shaped cross section. At the base of this bar is a feature resembling a spoon bowl, being sub-circular in plan with a domed upper surface and concave underside. At the apex of the bar is the hemispherical head of an integral rivet. The stem of the rivet projects backwards at 90 degrees, terminating in a squared-off end. Immediately below this rivet, the back of the bar is concave.

Probably a late Medieval to Modern copper alloy mount or furniture fitting, but it may be a Victorian or Edwardian funerary fitting. The back plate comprises four opposed fleur de lis with a central perforation. Through this is passed the shank, for the knob, which has been secured with a square headed iron rivet at the rear. The shank is attached to sub conical knob decorated with three sets of concentric inset lines. The exact purpose of the mount is hard to determine, but the presence of the adhering corrosion products suggests it was originally attached to, or deposited near, anot…

Incomplete cast copper alloy Anglo-Scandinavian strap mount, probably for a stirrup, with a projecting zoomorphic terminal in the form of a beast's head at its apex. There are two circular attachment holes set along the long axis of the mount: the upper hole is empty and the lower one is still filled with iron corrosion product from the remains of the rivet that would have held the mount to a leather strap.
