Copper alloy plate brooch. Cast discoid plate retaining paired lugs for a probably iron spring and an opposed catch plate. Extensive rust on the back may arise from decay of the pin and may incorporate mineral preserved textile traces. The front bears the bordered relict of a curvilinear design in which a reflective spot of enamel appears. This could perhaps suggest a brooch of Weetch type 18, c. AD800-900, though earlier plate brooches include the use of enamel in more symmetrical arrangements. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Early Medieval, 100-1000 Diameter: 28.6mm, Thickness (pl…

The length of the shank is 62mm, is oblong in cross section and tapers to a flattened end at the distal tip. The widest point across the head (diagonally) is 31mm and the narrowest width across the head is 26mm. Probable Axe Head, an iron axe with an unusually long, oblong shaped socket with a split seam. - Axes can be hard to date, stylistically, there is a common theme from the Roman period through to the Post-Medieval. However, the long socket, with the unusual curved butt on this example, are a confusion. The blade, in axe terminology, looks too 'closed' the overall look might suggest a much later date however the split socket is characteristic of late Roman and especially early medieval iron artefacts. Heavy corrosion covers the whole surface. The axe was found in an area of mostly Roman …

An incomplete corroded iron possible reaping-hook due to its size, shape and thickness. The object curves and tapers to a point and is sub-rectangular in section. The wider end of the object is broken. Because of these old breaks the attachment-end is missing, but due to the shape and thickness of the object it probably finishes in a flanged socket similar to Manning 1985, p.54, fig. 14. This object would benefit from further conservation and analysis, particularly in order to gain further insight into the object's original shape and how it was manufactured (i.e. wrought, etc).

Two hand wrought iron nails; one near complete the other fragmentary. Each shaft is square in section and each tapers along its length. The head of the nail is rectangular in plan and triangular in section (the head is a faceted dome). It is possible due to the nature of the site that these are Roman in date although due to the nature of the artefact type and its longevity it is very difficult to date specifically. A broad date range of 50 AD - 1850 is suggested. The nails are a mid brown orange colour with encrusted and laminating surfaces. The nails have a bulk weigh…
