Incomplete copper-alloy cast & forged tool of uncertain date, probably Medieval to post Medieval, c.1200-1800. The tool is square in section with a tapered and pointed working end. The very tip of the tool is flattened and it is thought that the item probably served as a punch. The striking end is broken and it is notable that the shaft has a slight twist from top to bottom probably due to striking. Due to the functional nature of this item it is difficult to date precisely. The dating is based on the use of copper-alloy as opposed to an iron-based alloy & the file marks wh…

Lead Offcut. Triangular fragment of cast sheet of a gauge apt to structural use. One face bears the marks from rouletting wheels of two sizes, along with a series of knife-cut strokes which appear to provide a margin for one rouletted line, and also form the 'letters' H H H on one edge - the sheet was cut after all these marks were made, with two straight and one curved edges. Patinated overall. Marks from a rouletting tool usually occur on lead sheet of recent date, but the extent of patination may suggest this piece to be a little earlier. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1800. Le…

Lead and Copper alloy Weight. Cast cylindrical lead weight with a rectangular copper alloy insert measuring 6.8 by 4.7mm. Patinated overall. The mass indicates this to represent four Scandinavian units of 4.07gms, as used in the Viking Age bullion economy. The Early Medieval use of weights with inserted objects is well known (e.g. Biggs and Withers 2000, 18-20), while the correspondence of these and other weights with contemporary metrical systems is becoming better known as precise weights are measured and checked against contemporary systems. For the duration of an effective Viking …

Lead Weight. Disc cut from cast sheet with an off centre D shaped hole of diameter 4mm. Lightly patinated overall. As it now exists this object does not appear to match the various historic systems of weights and measures in use in the region, though it could have served as a quarter ounce averdepois weight before being perforated. Possibly a home made hem weight. Suggested date: Possibly Post-Medieval, 1700-1800. Diameter: 24.6mm, Thickness: 1.7mm, Weight: 6.14gms.

Copper alloy with enamel and gilding Mount. Cast heater shield shaped plaque with an heraldic blazon of chequers or and gules (gold and red - assuming the dull red of degraded enamel to reflect its original tint, and that untinted metal appeared yellow when uncorroded), with a maximum of five squares across the design, all within a recessed frame retaining extensive gilding. Drilled holes of diameter 2.5mm occur at the base and the one surviving top corner; the other corner is lost. Copper alloy Buckle. Cast D shaped buckle with narrowed strap bar. The form may derive from that of Viking Age buckles, though in this case the lighter frame and the loss of discernible zoomorphic features may suggest this to be a later derivative form.
