Object type: BOOK FITTING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy fitting with engraved decoration. The decoration shows a clothed and draped standing figure with a halo above his head, holding a book in the his left arm and a feather/quill pen in his right. In the background is a tower to the right of the figure. This object possibly depicts Matthew the Evangelist, as he is often seen in art with a book and a pen, and this also makes it possible that the object was a book fitting.

Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy strap end from the Early Medieval period. The strap end shows a zoomorphic decoration in a panel, although the object is corroded and this is difficult to distinguish. The terminal is also zoomorphic with a squared snout. At the broken end of the object a curved, incised line is visible, probably the bottom of a trilobate design. The object shows similarities to a strap end from South Newbald; figure 6.3.5 in the Leahy's 'Middle Anglo-Saxon Metalwork from South Newbald' in Geake and Kenny (2000).
