A fragment of a silver sheet huntsman's whistle. The whistle is tapering in form and the widest end is broken and flattened. The slit on the top of the whistle is intact and there is an attached loop on the bottom. A maker's mark appears on the top of the whistle, perhaps DL in a shaped shield. The owner's initials underneath the mouthpiece are illegible. The whistle is probably 17th century and has parallels with a similar whistle in the Treasure Annual Report 1998-9, no.242 from West Sussex. The length is 30.78mm and the width is 13.6mm.

The whistle is made from a cast tube of copper alloy. Towards one terminal is a semi-circular hole which is obliquely angled in profile to provide a lip which would give the whistle's sound. The surface of the whistle is corroded and encrusted, with small areas of a mid green patina. It is 31.1mm in length, 7.2mm in diameter, and weighs 3.92g. No parallel has been found for a copper alloy whistle of this type, but bone whistles of similar size and shape are illustrated in Margeson 1993 and Egan 1998. These are dated broadly to the medieval to post-medieval periods, 13th to 17th century.

Treasure Case 2005 T22: Acquired by South Molton and District Museum after being declared treasure. Description: Silver whistle cut from sheet and shaped into a tapering form. It has two applied transverse fillets at the widest end (the mouthpiece) and at the opposite end, which is damaged. At this point, there may have been a hollow cast sphere, with a 'pea' inside. An elaborate swag or garland of cast silver is soldered at three points and the whistle is surmounted by a punched Lombardic 'A'. Discussion: A similar whistle is part of the collections of the Somerset County Museu…

A fragment of a hollow object, oval in section and with tapering sides. Each 'narrow' side has a pair of projections with different sizes and positions on either side. Each 'wide' side has a panel of cast decoration which contains lettering on a background of parallel lines. The surviving end of each panel has a trifoliate spray. Around each panel is a frame infilled with diagonal lines. The form and meaning of the lettering in both panels is unclear. One side may begin SIT[...] and the other appears to end in a back-to-front R. Encircling the open original end of the object is a band…

Post Medieval silver whistle? 29mm long and 21mm wide. The object is very squashed but the silver is in good condition. It consists of a hollow sphere which has a prounounced ridge, 3mm wide and 2mm deep, decorated with deep notches running around it. There is a small solid shaft,12mm long, protruding from the object on the same axis as the ridge which has a small triangular protrusion near to the base. Below this is a curving sheet of silver which may have formed the hollow shaft? Below this is half of an oval shaped hole. The object is similar to a tudor hunting whistle, though this …

Incomplete copper alloy whistle of Post Medieval date, probably eighteenth century (AD 1700 – AD 1800). Length 67mmm, maximum diameter 16.5mm. Weight 10.05g. The whistle has been designed to resemble a cannon. The closed end of the whistle is cast and is composed of a base ring, a cascabel and a button. The button is elongated and has a transverse perforation which is 2.2mm in diameter. This perforation allowed the whistle to be suspended. Viewing the cascabel from the button end, it is decorated with a circle of repetitive tendril motifs. The base ring has beaded decoration around …

Fragment of a copper alloy whistle of Post Medieval date (AD 1500 – AD 1800). Length 49mm, diameter 5mm. Weight 3.92g. The weight includes some soil. The fragment is part of a decorated “hawking whistle”. It has been made from a single piece of sheet copper alloy which has been folded and joined by solder to form a hollow tube which is sub-circular in cross-section. The sheet has been thoughtfully cut so that the continuity of the decoration is not interrupted by the soldered seam which is clearly visible on the underside. The surface is decorated with three equally spaced longi…

A cast lead hawking whistle, probably post-medieval in date (circa 1650-1850). The whistle is cone shaped, tapering outwards from the open end. The open end of the whistle would have been the mouth piece. By looking inside the whistle one can see that the whistle is only hollow until about half of the way down the interior of the body of the whistle. There is a sheet of lead, dividing this space into two. Either side of this are the sound two holes, which would have allowed the air and therefore sound to pass down the whistle and out through these holes which are visible on the exterio…

A very worn whistle probably cast in pewter of probable post-medieval in date. The whistle is the shape of a frustum, or truncated cone, tapering outwards from the original open end. This latter would have been the mouthpiece. By looking inside one can see that the whistle is only hollow until about half of the way down the interior of the body of the whistle. Beyond this is a sheet of metal which divides the internal space into two. Central on either side of the exterior are two holes, one of which is abraded. The holes would have allowed the air to pass down the whistle and regulate…

Lead alloy or pewter hawking whistle of Post medieval date, possibly dating from the 18th century. The whistle is cast in the form of a dog’s head with a wide collar decorated with a ring and dot design. The dog is biting on an iron pin, which presumably would have formed a suspension ring.

Cast lead-alloy whistle in the shape of a pipe bowl, probably late 19th century in date. The pipe bowl is similar to clay pipe examples and is decorated with moulded decoration consisting of joined semicircles and small raised knops. The base of the bowl ends in a pointed spike. Casting flashes are prominent on both sides. Iron corrosion is evident on the rim, suggesting an iron collar. The beginning of the stem is intact, and it is unclear if the stem was also made of a lead alloy, ceramic or other material. See NARC-6E7E81 for a similar example. Further information on this artefa…

It increases in diameter from the mouth-piece, where it is 7mm in diameter, to the open end where the diameter is 9.5mm. This is a small lead figurine of a cockerel standing 36mm high, cast in the round from a two-piece mould. Its tail is typically displayed, and from its lower hind quarters there proceeds a hollow tube of lead which is circular or ovate in section. The cockerel's feet stand on a rounded base, part of which is broken away to reveal that the whole casting is hollow, and was perhaps once stoppered below the base. The pipe or tube described above is half-round hollow (in the upper half) but filled with lead in the lower or under part of the tube. The cockerel's body surface is covered with …
