Object type: COIN
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small, worn and possibly cut object, perhaps a coin, of uncertain date. The metal is silver/grey in colour, although the wear and some encrustation make it difficult to ascertain precisely what the metal is and it could well be a more recent alloy. The original object has worn or been clipped/cut to leave a small flan that is approximately circular in shape. One face has traces of decoration that comprises part of a legend reading []VM[] with a line below. The style of the lettering is similar to Iron Age or Roman coinage, however it may equally be of much later Medieval to Post-Medi…

The find consists of a rough, cylindrical ingot with rounded ends and hammered surfaces; length, 38.1 mm; width, 12.4 mm; weight 30.58 g. It does not conform to the usual shape of either Roman or Early Medieval ingots and has no distinguishing features. It is therefore undiagnostic and undatable, so does not qualify as Treasure under the stipulated criteria of the Treasure Act. We recommend that the Secretary of State should disclaim the Crown's interest in this find and should be grateful if the Coroner would authorise its return.

A gold finger ring of uncertain date. It has a plain circular band that is sub-circular in section with a flat inner edge. The ring measures 17.36mm in internal diameter, 22.84mm in external diameter, and weighs 8.58g. This plain gold ring is a beach find from close to a known Roman site. It is therefore possible that it could date to any time from the Roman period onwards. It was found over 20 years ago and is a single stray find, it therefore doe…
