Two fragments of a Medieval Venetian silver soldino of the doge Antonio Venier dating between AD 1382 and 1400. The reverse type is that of a winged and nimbate loin withn a circle.
The fragments weigh a total of 0.23g. Both pieces are irregularly shaped, the larger measuring 13.3 x 9.8mm, the smaller c. 7.7 x 7.5mm.
Soldinios were known as the galyhalpens (galley-halfpence) as it was brought by the annual Venetian trading fleets. The soldino was about the size of English halfpennies and was popular because of a contemporary lack of small change.
