Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Warwickshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a Medieval seal matrix. The matrix is made from cast lead or lead alloy which has then been engraved. It is a flat-back type, and originally would have been a pointed oval in plan. At the corner there is a small integral lug protruding. The device on the base is missing. The legend reads ‘+ S’ : [ ] O P T/F’. The reverse is undecorated. The matrix is in poor condition and only a fragment remains. The ‘broken’ edge may be intentional because it is a regular straight line, with rounded edges and the patina continues over this edge as it does on the surfac…

Crude cast lead weight, probably medieval. Thick circular disc with two central raised pellets surrounded by four equally spaced raised trefoils. Diameter 29.25mm, thickness 11.44mm, weight 76.83g. This weight does not appear to correspond to a standard medieval weighing system - see Geoff Egan's 'Medieval Househould' (HMSO 1998) p301-4. Similar weights are published in Biggs & Withers ('Lead Weights' Galata 2000) p21-5, in particular no.s 38, 39, 42, (ranging in weight from 70-85g) although non are identical.

Cast copper alloy object, proably Medieval, possibly a handle. Flat sectioned openwork lozenge with a lozenge shaped projection from one side corner, and probably another broken from the opposite corner; a sub-triangular larger projection from the top corner with a circular piercing (presumably for suspension, rather than a rivet hole), and a triangular projection from the lower corner with a curved lug projecting from either side - these may have held a cylindrical object. The corner projections would originally have been linked by an outer border, but much of this is now broken off. …

A silver fragment of a belt clasp or hook. The terminals of the hook are missing but the hook would have been S-shaped. The central area is waisted with three raised circular bands in the centre (the central band is widest). Either side of this the hook has irregular linear surface decoration (possibly intended to represent foliage) before narrowing to undecorated sections towards the broken ends, which are circular in section. Similar hooks often have zoomorphic terminals and were used in place of a buckle.
