Fine-grained Sandstone water-rolled cobble, plough stone. A small rounded cobble of naturally formed plano-convex section with a smoothed and slightly convex surface at one end with fine unidirectional striations on its surface. Dr Kevin Leahy has drawn attention to the Irish currency of such objects, and to their wider occurrence across the Viking world, and infers an early medieval date for the introduction of plough stones as a method to prolong the working life of a wooden mould board. Patinated flint lithic implement. A curved L-shaped flint hook with two broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulbar ventral surface. Abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect formed a concave hollow on one side. The appearance of retouch from the dorsal side is perhaps the misleading result of edge-on impacts against the longer side of the object. A dense white patina suggests it subsequently endured exposure to a calcareous environment. The concave form is sometimes regarded as indicating use as a ‘shaft straightener’.
