A cast copper-alloy pen of probable medieval date. Knobbed shaft with four longitudinal rows of linked lozengiform facets; hollows between. Roughly hemispherical knop with flat, sub-circular terminal. Between the knop and the knobbed decoration the shaft narrows to a diameter of c. 3.5mm over a length of 11.2mm. There is a similar plain, narrow section between the knobbed decoration on the shaft and the lanceolate end, 14.7mm in length. The lanceolate end is 27.9mm in length, 7.3mm at its widest point before tapering to a point. There is a bevelled groove filed along each side t…

Lead unidentified object, circular in section, and narrowing from 9.2mm diameter at one end to 7.0mm diameter at the other. It weighs 28.33g and is 81.5mm in length. The surface is extremely pitted. The object may have been used as a writing implement but it is a lead object of any date between the late medieval period and the 19th century with a purpose that we can only guess at.

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cumbria
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A sub-triangular shaped portion of a window pane made from flattened cow horn. The object forms a rough right triangle. The long side of the triangle is 93mm in length. The next side is perpendicular and measures 69mm in length. A short length (21mm) turns purpendicular toward the hypotenuse. The hypotenuse is 110mm in length. None of the sides are perfectly straight. Toolmarks attest that the two 'legs' of the triangle - the sides perpendicular to each other - were cut, whereas the hypotenuse was formed as a result of the material breaking. Striations natural to the horn a…

A large fragment of Medieval painted window glass. It is roughly circular in form and has figural decoration depicting a face, probably of an angel or perhaps a saint. The glass is clear with many small air pockets and a slightly rough texture particularly on the back face and probably as a result of the method of manufacture. At the top of the sherd there is a short and smooth complete rounded edge, the curved form of the edges to either side deliberately worked to give the fragment its shape. The lower edges of the glass terminate in old breaks. The fragment measures 108.67mm in wid…

Two fragments of probably late medieval or early post-medieval stained window glass. The glass appears to have been clear originally, but is highly corroded with a flaking surface. The reverse is particularly pitted, which may have occured due to exposure to the elements whilst still positioned in the window frame. Traces of painted geometric decoration can be seen on the inner faces of both fragments. Although this is now a reddish colour, when originally applied it was probably a black vitreous paint that would then have been fired. On the larger fragment this decoration consists of…

A fragment of crudely made Medieval lead window vent. Weight 16.22g, surviving length 54.74mm, surviving width 54.07mm, thickness 2.43mm. The fragment shows a foliate motif similar to fleur de lis. Such window vents were in use up until the end of the 16th century and an example of a late vent can be seen at Hampton Court. This fragment could have come from a monastic building. These window vents seem to copy local monastic window tracery styles for their design, and decline in use after the dissolution of the monasteries.

Rectilinear fragment of an openwork lead object. Two edges are straight, with diagonal struts between them forming triangles, but not enough of the object survives to reconstruct a plausible pattern. One of the triangles is blocked by a run of melted lead. The reverse is flat and the struts all have a D-shaped cross-section. This may possibly be a fragment of a medieval or early post-medieval ventilator panel or grille from a window (J. Cherry, Finds Research Group Datasheet 2, p. 2), which were in use from the 13th to the 17th century. Surviving length 28 mm, width 19 mm. 5.55g.

Lead ventilating panel from a window. The panel is square, slightly damaged at one corner and decorated with openwork tracery patterns. Decorative ventilating panels from windows have been found on monastic sites dating from the 13th to the 15th centuries. Fragment of painted window glass. The glass is honey coloured with a golden mottled patina. The surface is decorated with a painted motif of perhaps a stylised leaf or sprig of foliage in a red-brown outline. The expense of such window glass at this time must indicate that it came from a high status building.
