Cast lead weight or possibly a spindle whorl. The weight is circular with a flat base from which the side slope upwards and inwards to a flat top with central round piercing. The weight is 25.3mm in diameter and 9.5mm thick, the central hole is a maximum of 6.5mm in diameter and it weighs 19.5 grams. Such weights were easy to make and had a wide variety of uses, they can date from the Roman to post medieval period.

Cast lead alloy weight. The weight is circular in cross section and rectangular in plan with flat ends and slightly convex sides. It is 20.8mm in diameter at the widest point, 11.4mm at the narrowest end, 38.4mm long and weighs 81 grams. There is a cicular hole 7.1mm in diameter running down the lengh. Such weights were easy to make locally and had a wide variety of uses; they are thus hard to date precisely, most are from the Roman, Medieval or Post Medieval periods. This example may have been used for fishing.

Age uncertain. Roman-Post Medieval. Crudely cast, freestanding weight with central hole or probable spindle whorl. Length 25.4mm, Width 24.3mm, Thickness 11.7mm, Diameter 25.4mm, Weight 39.6g. Flat, rounded conical shape with a relatively large central hole - possibly to allow sets of weights to be threaded with a thong for transportation or for use as a spindle whorl. Plain, undecorated type with grey patina, some slight surface plough damage. A lead alloy weight, possibly Roman. The weight is 33.7mm in diameter and 11mm thick. It weighs 81.15g or 2.86oz. This is similar to the weight of quarter of a Roman pound (Biggs and Withers, 2000, Lead Weights; the David Rodgers Collection). It is circular with a straight or slightly angled edge, wider at the base. The underside is flat with a slightly rounded top. The weight is a creamy white colour and lacks decoration, with one etched line running across it slightly off centre. Lead weights are very imperfectly understood currently. It is hoped that by recording them as often as p…

Triangular lead weight, uncertain date. Isoceles triangle, elongated oval in plan, and with piercing through its longest axis (off-centre at the base). Thick cream/brown patina. Length 39.0mm, width across base 37.1mm, thickness across base 13.20mm, width across apex 11.6mm, thickness across apex 6.5mm, weight 80.58g.
Uncertain date, Roman-post medieval; possibly a light 1/4lb weight; under the Roman system a 1/4lb weight should be c.82g, and under the medieval Tower system (in use from 1250 or earlier) it should be 87.5g. This weight is closest to the Roman weight.

Cast copper alloy object, probably a weight. The object is sub rectangular in plan with straight sides and rounded ends. In section the sides are sightly concave with a hollowed top and slightly rounded base. The top is marked by 5 parallel incised lines; they are visible only in the dipped section and the outer two are faint. It is very smooth and tactile with no breaks and a dark green patina.
It is 29.2mm long, 18.4mm wide, 6.2mm thick and weighs 20.29 grams, 0.7 ounces.
No parallel could be found for this object in the usual sources but it is probably Roman - Medieval in date.

Cast lead weight. The weight is rectangular in section and tapers from the base to the top. The base is flat so it can stand but it also has a piercing at the top 3.6mm in diameter. It is 37.8mm long, and the base is 20.1mm wide by 16.7mm thick and it weighs 85 grams.
Such weights are hard to date precisely and could be from any date from the Roman period onwards.

5 cast lead weights
Weight 1:Oblong. It is 30.5mm long, 14.6mm wide by 14.4mm thick and it weighs 49.68 grams.
Weight 2: Cone shaped with hole in the base. 16.9mm tall, 12.9mm diameter at the base and 11.59 grams.
Weight 3: Disk with hole through the centre. 20.5mm in diameter and 11.3mm tall, 29.1 grams, hole through centre 4.8mm in diameter.
Weight 4: Circular plano convex weight with flat base, sloping sides and hole. The hole is off centre suggesting this was not a spindle whorl. It is 22.8mm in diameter, 13.3mm tall and 26.0 grams in weight.

A slightly incomplete lead steelyard weight, dating from the Roman period. The weight is broadly cone shaped, with a sub circular sectioned iron shaft protruding from the top and a further circular sectioned shaft issues from the centre of the base, and stretching towards the outer edge flush to the base. The base is broadly flat, although there are some recessed areas to either side of the centre. Whilst broadly conical, the sides of the weight are slightly irregular, with some indentations and raised areas. The weight has a mass of 92.8g and it is 32.3mm long, of which the top …

Ceramic weight made from a piece of Roman greyware. The weight is roughly circular and has a drilled circular hole in the centre.
The object is unusual in that it was discovered in a vegetable patch stuck to a piece of rubber cut to the same size as the weight, probably indicating that it was found in recent years and reused, then lost again.

Object type: STEELYARD WEIGHT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A corroded cast lead object with a semicircular iron loop at one end and a broken one at the other - probably a Roman steelyard weight. The object is biconical in shape, as typical Roman steelyard weights were (Geake 2001, 67), with both ends truncated where the iron suspension loops are sited. The object's weight, at c. 154, equates very approximately to half a Roman 'libra' (pound), allowing for wear.

A spherical lead weight, probably a steelyard weight, of Roman or later date. It has worn surfaces and a small semi-circular suspension loop, probably made of iron, at the top. The weight is 32.44mm in diameter and weighs 158.012g. It is difficult to give a precise date for this example. It is possible that the weight is Roman in date, although its shape might indicate a later date in the Medieval or Post-medieval periods. See Bailey, 1995: pp. 31 for a similar, undated, spherical example.
