A complete biconical cast lead probable steelyard weight, probably dating from the Roman period, about AD 43 - 410. The object is biconical with flattened ends that encompass an irregular shaped hole through the centre. Any attachment loop is now missing. Dimensions; Length 18mm, Diameter 18.4mm, Hole diameter 4.7mm to 4.2mm and Weight 26.87g. The mass suggests it could have been used as a one ounce weight in the Roman system. It is also close to the mass of a Medieval or Post Medieval ounce, so a later date cannot be ruled out, but Roman steelyard weights are usually biconical…

A cast lead weight, perhaps a plumb bob or steelyard weight, possibly of Roman date, AD 43 - 410. It is in the form of a narrow cone, flat at the base and rising to a rounded apex, with a wider collar round the base. This makes is roughly acorn shaped. Slightly off-centre in the base are the remains of an iron suspension loop, now corroded and mostly missing. There are no other markings. The weight has a light cream coloured patina. It is 18.9mm in diameter at the base and 28.7mm high. It weighs 51.5g so was perhaps intended as a 2 uncia or two ounce weight. A similar example is …

A lead weight posibly of Roman date, AD 43 - 410, possibly a steelyard weight. It is in the form of a pointed ovoid or teardrop or pear shape and has iron embedded in the apex (pobably the remains of an iron suspension loop). The surface of the weight is rough and has a grey patina. The weight is 58.03mm long and 42.89mm diameter. It weighs 495g (1lb 1.5oz imperal). The mass is broadly similar to one and a half Roman libra, though the missing iron loop would add mass. A number of similar weights are recorded on the database: compare for example records SUR-61A232, NLM-43ABDB and…

A lead possibly steelyard weight of Roman date, about AD 43 - 410. The weight is ovoid or egg-shaped and has a circular perforation (about 7.0mm diameter) through it from top to bottom which would have housed a separate suspension loop. The mass of 81.09g is roughly equivalent to quarter of a Roman libra. Length: 33.45mm, diameter in the largest centre section: 24.50mm. The ends have a diameter of about 15.0mm. There is damage at one end where the possible hook was situated. The weight has a thick cream/white patina suggesting considerable age. Roman steelyard weights are usually…

An incomplete lead and iron steelyard weight, of possible Roman date, AD 43 - 410. The body of the weight is sub-piriform (almost acorn shaped). A narrow iron rod projects from both ends, probably the remains of a suspension loop. There are no markings and the surface is rough. It is 32.8mm long, 19.8mm diameter, and 46.27g. Allowing for the incomplete loops, this is close to two Roman ounces (Unciae) in mass (54.6g). It could also be a two ounce weight (1/8 lb) in other systems of measurement.

It has an elongated tear drop-shaped perforation at the tapered end which is filled with iron corrosion. The object is crudely made and appears to have extra blobs of metal pressed onto both faces. The iron at one end is sufficiently central that it could have been a suspension loop, but at the other end it is well to the side. Weights of this form are usually considered to be Roman, but the steelyard was also used in the Medieval and Post Medieval periods. The lead has a grey and white patina and is pitted. A lead-alloy steelyard weight with iron suspension loop, probably dating from the Roman period. The solid-cast body is of circular section, and is ovoid. The apex loop, made of iron, is almost entirely missing. Its mass is 305g, which is a little less than a Roman pound (libra) at 328.9g. Allowing for the missing iron loop and surface damage, this could be a weight for 1 Roman pound. The surface of the weight is covered with dents and scratches, but most are patinated to a grey/cream colour. Compare BH-3FAAC1.

A cast lead alloy steelyard weight of probable Roman date. It is spherical in form with a central iron rod that was probably once a suspension loop and which protrudes through the base of the object. The weight has a mass of 179g which is only a little over half a Roman pound (libra). This steelyard weight may date as early as the Roman period given its findspot, however the shape might indicate a later date range, possibly as late as the Post-Medieval period. A roughly and distorted cast lead object, probably a Roman steelyard weight dating from AD 43 - 410. It has a hollow base, rounded sides and a lop-sided domed top. The central perforation is oval, perhaps squashed, and is 6.8mm long by 3mm wide. Measurements are; length 14.3mm, diameter at the base 20.1mm and weight 27.0g. The mass suggests that is could be a one uncia weight, and the central hole may have held a suspension loop. It has a well developed white atina. The object could also be a deformed spindle whorl dating from AD 500 - 1500, or another form of weight.
