Incomplete lead toy, probably representing a windmill. The object is flat and has a square body with a splayed foot. The body measures 16mm by 16mm and is divided into four smaller squares, which in turn are subdivided into four smaller recessed cells thus creating 16 recessed cells in total. The sides of the body are complete, however the top is broken, suggesting that the apex and the sails are missing. The splayed foot is decorated with four openwork triangles, probably representing stilts.

A fragment from a cast lead-alloy toy 'horn book' of post-medieval date. The fragment measures 24.1mm by 20.1mm by 1.5mm and weighs 4.05g. It is from the top right hand corner, and reads [A]BCDE on the top line and [FG]HIK on the second. The letters are within a border consisting of two lines of beading. The back is undecorated. The style of the lettering and missing J suggest a date between c. 1650-1740. Horn books were teaching aids which appeared in the 16th century, and consisted of a wooden frame which contained a sheet of paper or vellum, on which was printed the alphabet (an…

A cast lead Shy cock toy, probably 18th century date. The object has been cast in one piece. The toy has been made from a flat piece of lead, in the shape of the bird – the ‘cock’. The head and body of the bird all remain intact. The legs also survive and have been cast integrally with the circular base. On one surface the bird has been decorated with lines representing feathers. These objects were used as a child’s toy. The idea was that they had to throw stones at the birds until they fell over. Similar toys can be seen in H. Forsyth and G. Egan; 2004; p. 240.
