Lead alloy toy soldier. Solid cast three-dimensional naturalistically rendered model of a mounted uniformed cavalryman or officer astride his mount [separate and now lost], rendered at a scale of 35mm or c.1:50. The subject is identifiable by his tunic and a cartridge case worn on a transverse strap; epaulettes may denote rank, and calf-length boots appear. A slightly incomplete cast lead alloy toy standing bowl (“flat cup”), probably dating from the post-medieval period, about 1550 - 1650. The toy has an incomplete and slightly distorted base, probably originally circular in plan, which tapers to a narrow waist (also circular in section) above which is the larger body of the vessel. The body has been flattened but is likely to have been broadly hemispherical. There is a rib around the remaining circumference of the upper and lower surface of the base. The exterior of the body is decorated with raised floral and leaf designs. The rim…

Copper alloy toy fragment. Cast one-piece model of the lock from a flintlock gun, comprising an oval or lentoid plate with a fixing hole at either end, one retaining an iron pin, and with a screw and the moving part of the flintlock and the plate which it strikes modelled in three dimensions, though flat-backed. This was presumably attached to a wooden model of a pistol, modelled closer to life size than was usual for cheaper toys made of lead alloy. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1800

A pair of lead Post Medieval whirligig toys or buzz wheels probably dated from AD 1600 - 1800. The larger buzz wheel is a slightly irregular circle with serrated edges, and features four small perforated holes all of which are off centre. A string would of been passed through these holes. The smaller buzz wheel has a part missing and the part remaining is serrated, but this is more uneven than the larger example. It features two small holes for the string to pass through, one of which is markedly off- centre, and near the edge. Both buzz wheels have a dark grey patina. The larger one…

Late Post Medieval to early Modern copper alloy novelty toy. It takes the form of a 'comic' head. It was designed as a novelty to 'entertain' children by detonating a small fulminate charge. A separate jaw fitted into the rectangular slot in the base of the head and the charge was placed in between. When the toy was thrown against a hard surface the percussion set off the fulminate with a loud bang. Dates to between c1800 and c1940 AD.
The length is 20mm, width 20mm, thickness 17mm, and the weight is 26.97g.

Lead alloy and iron toy gun fragment. One half of the joining pair forming the handle of a miniature toy pistol, with a flat expanded end to its butt and with floral and cabled decoration moulded in relief on its hand grip. The cabled decoration frames an oval panel bearing an animal’s head: a horse may be intended though the appearance is of a camel. Rust stains mark the sites of two iron rivets attaching this half to its counterpart; one rivet is set adjacent to an integrally cast crossbar. The imaginative anachronistic decoration might suggest this to represent a pirate’s or hi…

Post Medieval lead alloy toy gun or petronel. Most of the iron firing mechanism is lost. The outer faces of the butt are moulded in imitation of a contemporary pistol. They are decorated with a low relief scrolling pattern within a raised border. There are lentoid plates on the sides which once housed an imitation of a pistols firing mechanism and have hatched decoration. This area holds the corroded remains of the iron firing mechanism secured by two rivets. The overall form resembles that of toy petronels or cavalry pistols reported from London, where a 17th-century date is suggested…

A cast copper alloy possible toy full cheek snaffle bit of post medieval to modern date, about AD 1700 - 1950. The item appears to be half of a full cheek snaffle bit which just one half of the two piece mouthpiece surviving. However, it is much, much smaller than a functional bridle bit. The surviving part of the mouthpiece is 20mm long, so the full mouthpiece would be only 4cm, much smaller than even a bit for a miniature pony. The mouthpiece has a loop at the narrower end, where it would articulate with the other half part of the mouthpiece. It is cast integrally with the cheekpi…
