An Early Medieval copper alloy stirrup strap mount, dating from c. AD 1000 to 1100. The mount is broadly rectangular in shape, with sides which curve and taper towards the projection at the top of the object. At the bottom of the reverse of the object are the remains of a flange, giving a broadly L-shaped profile. There are details of open work decoration at the top of the mount; five circular apertures are arranged in a curve across the top of the mount with two larger oval apertures immediately below. There may be other moulded decoration on the front face of the object, but this is…

An early-medieval to medieval copper-alloy stirrup terminal.
The piece is zoomorphic in nature, taking the form of a three-dimensional representation of the head of a beast. The terminal is roughly semi-cylindrical, with an open underside, into which the stirrup arm would have fitted. The top of the animal's head is humped and has a sub-triangular moulding on its upper surface. This triangle tapers towards the snout, extending down the gently sloping brow and separating the recessed, sub-rectangular eye sockets. The ears, located behind the brow hump, are also recessed, their bac…

An incomplete, worn copper-alloy Early-Medieval/Anglo-Scandinavian stirrup-strap mount of Williams Class B It is sub-rectangular with a projecting angled flange. There are two circular rivet holes through the flange which measure 3mm in diameter. The object thickens slightly towards the top before it terminates with an ancient break. There are no upper fixing holes present. The outer face is decorated with worn interlace which is possibly zoomorphic but difficult to interpret due to the wear. The stirrup-strap mount has a light green corroded surface.

An incomplete copper-alloy Anglo-Scandinavian stirrup mount of Williams' Class A, Type 10 mounts (Williams, 1997: pp. 53-58), c.11th century AD. It is missing the upper half of the object due to old breaks. The mount is triangular in form, slightly concave on the front face, and expanding towards its base where each corner has stylised or debased animal head projections. The main body of the plate has moulded and openwork decoration comprising a beast with long body and neck, coilded probably into an S-shape and entwined with tendrils. An Early Medeiavl copper alloy stirrup-strap mount, dating late 10th-11th century AD. The mount conforms to Williams Class A type 12. It is roughly lozenge shaped, with a circular loop at the top and a rectangular tab at the base for attachment. There is a rectangular projection at the base, which would have fitted underneath the stirrup strap. A rivet would have attached the object to the strap through the upper loop and the lower tab, traces of which remain in both. There is an openwork design, consisting of four lozenges in the centre to form a saltire. There are rounded nodules in…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy stirrup terminal of late Anglo-Saxon/Anglo-Scandinavian date. The terminal has a hollow back that is semi-cylindrical in form and missing part of its attachment end due to old breaks. This contains traces of a white substance, probably used to solder the terminal to the now missing stirrup and is closed at the base. At the attachment end the front face of the terminal has a moulded collar formed from two narrow and projecting transverse ribs separated by a broader, bead-shaped rib. From the base of the object projects a flattened trefoil or fleur-de-lis…
