A complete cast copper alloy stirrup-strap mount dating to the late early medieval period. The mount is rectangular in plan with four vertical openwork rectangular slots forming the main frame. The top of the frame and the 'slots' have rounded tops while the base has a small flange to the reverse. At the top of the mount are two iron rivets and a further two rivets in the flange which also has a separate fitting of copper alloy sheet. Williams 1997 Class B, no type. This is a very unsual design and no parallels were immediately forthcoming, however simlar openwork style mounts have be…

Copper alloy and lead object, kindly identified by Alex Bliss as a stirrup side terminal of 11th century date and probable Anglo-Scandinavian attribution. A small concavo-convex cast object of copper alloy, forming half a tube of wall thickness c.1.1mm, with a dense white filling in its concave side. Viewed in profile, the convex side is gently humped at one end, with a pair of angled ridges meeting between the hump and a rounded end. Abraded. The appearance is of a simple zoomorphic scheme, with the ridges representing eyes or brows, which might point to a Viking-Age date. Suggested …

A complete copper alloy early medieval (Anglo-Saxon) stirrup strap mount. It is roughly pentagonal in shape with a straight lower end and pointed apex knop, pierced with a single circular hole. The outer face is engraved interlace decoration in high relief. This motif appears to be upside down compared to the standard arrangement on mounts of this form, with the heads of two opposed open-mouthed beasts at the lower end, double stranded bodies curving down either side of the mount, and in the centre one double stranded foreleg raised to meet each other in the centre and one curving dow…

An early-medieval stirrup-strap mount, dating to the 11th century, of Williams (1997) Class A, Type 4,
Description: The mount has an oval frame, trilobate apex and expanded base. The frame is decorated with a highly devolved hirsute human mask cast in relief within a raised border which runs the circumference of the oval frame. The raised frame may in fact be a pair of framing ribbon-form beasts whose tails curl into spirals which flank the apex lobe. The head ends of the two beasts would curl around the lower two rivet holes at the outside corners of the wide base. s although are …

An early medieval zoomorphic stirrup terminal dating to the 11th century. A cast copper alloy, hollow backed terminal with a supporting ledge. It is in the form of a beast's head with large protruding eyes and a snub-nosed muzzle. The object is heavily corroded but the body appears to have been decorated to mimic scales. The back of the terminal is hollow and retains traces of the iron solder used to attach it to the end of the stirrup arm. A late Saxon copper alloy stirrup strap mount of Williams' Class A, Type 10. The mount is pear-shaped or teardrop-shaped and has an integral loop at the top. The front of the mount is worn, but traces of an interlaced animal (possibly seen from above) are visible. The head is probably set so that the snout extends towards the apex, but much of the detail is unclear. The base of the mount extends slightly at both edges; the area between the edges undulates according to two moulded strands, perhaps representing foliage or parts of the animals body. The rearward ledge on the reverse is m…
