An Early Medieval copper-alloy stirrup mount, dating to c.AD 1000 - 1100. Williams (1997) Class A,Type 9. The stirrup is sub-trapezoidal in plan and rectangular in section. The upper edge exhibits a projecting lobe with a central rivet hole for attachment. Below is an anthropomorphic facing mask with recessed eyes of differing shapes, a central moulded trapezoidal nose and two transverse mouldings indicating the mouth. An incomplete copper-alloy early medieval (late Anglo-Saxon) stirrup terminal. The object is an elongated, tubular shape, C-shaped in cross-section with an open concave reverse and zoomorphic moulding on the outer face and sides. Description: The mount is sub-triangular in plan with a zoomorphic head terminal at the apex. The decoration consists of a series of looping and bifurcating tendrils which end in lobes. The flange is not intact and is the piece that is missing. A minimal amount of iron corrosion is present on the reverse apex loop from the rivets. The object has a light red-brown patina.
