An incomplete Roman cast copper-alloy mount probably of the second century. The mount is lozenge shape and sub-rectangular in cross-section. A sub-circular knop decorated with an arched rib projects inwardly from one corner of the plate. The opposite corner of the plate has an old work break. The edges of the plate are raised and shallowly D-shape in section. A narrow ridge forms an internal lozenge. Neither the lozenge field at the centre or the surrounding cell are in-filled. Copper-alloy cast mount in the form of a three dimensional duck. The mount dates to the Roman period. The entire item is cast in one piece.
The base of the mount which forms the lower bottom of the duck's body is an oval shape. Above this is a slightly shorter oval which accounts for the duck's wings. This oval has a small ridge at the centre to define the wings, and merges at the front section into the breast and neck. The neck bends backwards before merging into the head and beak. The eyes are defined by moulded relief.
The underside of the base shows two circular sectioned st…

A fragment of a copper-alloy object, possibly a mount dating to the Roman period depicting a boar. The fragment, although heavily corroded, comprises the front portion of the animal, with the head, ridged back and legs rendered in the three dimensions. Only a small part of the left leg survives; the right leg exists as a scar. Both sides of the boar's body are decorated with diagonal grooves, perhaps intended to represent hair. Unlike other similar boar figurines this example is cast solid, with the body almost triangular in cross-section. The boar measures 26mm in length, 16mm in hei…

A copper alloy terminal, most likely dating to the Roman period. It is in the shape of a wolf's head. The terminal has notches on the side, representing pulled back ears with engraved lines creating the illusion of fur underneath. Along the top of the terminal runs a ridge, giving the illusion of a thick brow ridge. The eyes are formed of two engraved pointed ovals on either side of the terminal, with the left eye having an indentation in the centre to indicate a pupil. The right eye is worn but may have had a similar feature. The features of the snout are cast. The underside of the t…

A Roman copper-alloy strap mount.
The head of the mount takes the form of a flat-sectioned pelta with inward-curving terminals, between which is a T-shaped projection. Two integrally cast rivets, both with discoidal stops, project backwards from the reverse. The uppermost rivet is located behind the T-shaped projection and the second, also central, is a short distance up from the bottom edge. The mount is slightly distorted but otherwise survives in good condition.

A copper-alloy mount of probable Roman date.
The solid-cast mount is sub-conical, flaring towards the top, where there is a sub-globular finial with incuse pellet at its apex. A patch of iron corrosion is situated at the centre of the flat underside and probably represents the remains of a shaft or rivet.
Length: 21.5mm; width: 12.2mm. Weight: 11.42g.
A similar piece, described as a possible handle terminal, is no. 4656 from a Late Roman context in Colchester (Crummy 1983: 168/Fig. 204).

An incomplete copper-alloy Roman mount.
This mount comprises a rectangular plate (now damaged), with part of a curved projection on the top left-hand corner. A panel of enamelled cells occupies most of the upper surface of the plate. Two lozenge-shaped cells are located at the centre, set side-by-side and retaining parts of their dark blue insets. A border of inward-pointing triangular cells surrounds these lozenges; one retains its entire red enamel inset, and traces of red survive in two of the others. An incised groove extends around the panel of cells, with a border of interloc…

A Roman copper-alloy mount with enamelled decoration.
The discoidal head of the mount has a circular cell at its centre; this is surrounded by two concentric cells, with a separating moulded ring and a circumferential rim. Much of the enamel has been lost, but the inset in the central cell appears to have comprised a blue flower head with red centre and a white field surrounding. No trace of enamel remains in the inner ring. The few remaining insets in the outer ring indicate a pattern comprised of alternating rectangular cells of dark (blue or black) and light-coloured enamel. The…

Propeller-shaped mounts are associated with the Roman mililtary and probably date from the 4th to early 5th century (see Bishop and Coulston 1993: 174, nos. 3 and 5).
