Lead ingot. A small cast plano-convex object, rounded at one end and cut with a knife obliquely at the other. Patinated. A small cut mark also appears on the upper surface. The mass of accompanying material is of Roman date, though with an admixture of medieval post-medieval material, which typically comprises small and heavily abraded objects. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410 Length: 34.2mm, Width: 21.8mm, Height: 16.8mm, Weight: 65.67gms

TREASURE CASE : 2023 T770. Description:  A fragment of silver probable hack of possible late Roman date, c.AD 300 – 410. The fragment is rectangular in plan and section with cuts to each four sides. The upper surface is decorated with partial curvilinear tendrils. Two small annulets can also be determined to one corner. The reverse is undecorated. Dimensions: Length: 25.6mm; Width: 9.1mm; Thickness: 2.4mm; Weight: 3.9g. Discussion: The object is likely to be a cut fragment (i.e. Hacksilber) of a larger object, possibly a vessel such as a shallow dish or small plate.…

Small copper alloy ingot, broadly wedge shaped although the narrowing of section is is not at all sharp and the narrow end terminates in a rounded stub. The other, thicker, end is probably broken. It is possible that this was a bar from which the coin blanks to make counterfeit radiate imitations were chopped. Weight 7.04g.

A cast lead artefact, probably a lead ingot of unknown exact date (c. AD 43 - 1800). The object is roughly discoid and plano-convex, flat on the top and rounded below to form a shallow hemisphere. The edge is irregular. There are no distinct markings but the convex face is rough with several deep scratches or incisions. The object has a mid-grey patina.  For a comparable example see PAS record SWYOR-909AB4. Here, it is suggested such an object could be indicative of an ingot or it could represent a simple casting to collect waste material togethe…

Description:  A small fragment of hack-silver, cut from a Roman silver toiler article. The fragment is made from a piece of silver plate that thickens slightly towards its centre but is otherwise flat. In Plan the object has a rectangular tab projection similar to a tang which is  2.8mm wide, 1.9mm thick and extends c.8.5mm from the main body of the object before ending in a rounded break. The main plate attached to this is wider than the tab and has convex rounded edges which curves inwards from domed knops at the tab. One of these curves then has a concave turn in the edge…

Description: A Roman or Viking silver 'finger ingot' The ingot is cylindrical in shape with one mostly flat terminal from which it narrows to a dull rounded point. The surface is pitted in places. The object is a dark grey colour. Dimensions: The ingot is 44.2mm long, 6.5mm in diameter and weighs 8.96 grams. Discussion:  The simplicity of the form and the lack of archaeological context for most finds of finger-ingots make firm dating difficult. Richard Hobbs has highlighted that the ingot conforms to around 8 Roman scruples (a scruple is 1/24th of a ounce) whilst Gareth…

Description:  A small rectangular fragment of a cut gold bar with a dating range from Roman to Early-Medieval (c. AD100-AD700).  The bar is rectangular in plan with one end slightly tapering.  The non-tapering end appears to be roughly cut.  There are scratch marks and abrasions on the surface.  Dimensions:  L: 11.33mm, W: 3.74mm, T: 2.72, Weight: 1.57g. Discussion:  Small rectangular bars cut for bullion ingots are known from the 2nd century and 6th-7th centuries.  Examples cited by the British Museum curators who advised on the item (Richard …

A lead pig with probable engraved gaming board of possible Roman date, c. 43 - 400 AD. The object has been engraved on one side with what appears to be a possible gaming board, with irregular squares roughly 1cm square. Grid gaming boards in the Roman period varied in quality, with some examples carefully executed while others were irregular. Grid boards are traditionally associated with the game known as ludus latrunculorum (Schädler 1994). The most common configurations appear to have been 7x8, 8x8 and 9x10 grids, although the example seen here appears a lar…

14 droplets and fragments of gold and silver This interesting collection of material includes 9 molten droplets, 2 fragments that have been cut from ingots and 3 fragments of twisted wire. The objects in the collection are made from both gold (of different colours), silver and in one case lead with tin. One molten droplet clearly contains a partially melted piece of gold wire fused within it. Initially it was considered that these objects might have come from the manufacture of Iron Age gold and silver objects. Analysis of the metal content of the droplets and other pieces, …

A small copper alloy ingot of uncertain dating, possibly a rod ingot of Roman date, c. AD 100-410. The object is tongue shaped, rectangular with a rounded end and one slightly more squared end. It is rectangular in section. There are faint striations visible on the metal, which may suggest hammering has taken place across the surface. It is similar to other examples of ingots from the Roman (and to an extent the Early Medieval) period, including LON-D4EB08, WMID-0B0D27 and LIN-A513B2. Measurements: 49.5mm length, 11.1mm width, 5.7mm thickness, weight 19.41g.

A large Roman lead pig ingot, dating to AD 300 - 400. The ingot is sub-rectangular in plan and plano convex in section. One of the shorter edges is straight and appears to have been cut, the other is curved, the longer edges are slightly curved. The flat faced surface is inscribed with 'CCCXXXXX' or 'CCCXXXVI' (336). The C's are angular opposed to curved. A few more scratches are present on the upper surface but these appear to be scratches and not signify any more lettering. The underside is domed and undecorated though it has some deep scr…

Roman lead ingot c63-69AD. The ingot is rectangular in plan and trapezoid in section. The base is 530mm in length and 160mm wide but the top is smaller, measuring 490mm in length by 80mm wide. The maximum height is 110mm. It weighs 63.4kg, which is very close to the “standard weight” of 195 Roman librae for ingots, which is 63.85kg (Gardiner 2001, 12). At least four clear layers can be seen giving an indication of the way in which the ingot was produced, by pouring four separate batches of metal in the mould. One end of the ingot has been lost and there are cut marks on all fac…

Lead ingot. Two interleaved fragments of thick cast lead sheet, both patinated: the more substantial of a greyer tint, the smaller being cream-coloured with a square nail hole of c.2mm towards its outer edge. This may suggest it to be collected from the later stages of the stripping of lead from a structural context. The heftier fragment is cast sheet metal of thickness c.8mm, and is folded around the other fragment, which is only 4mm thick. The ingot thus formed was beaten to consolidate its cohesion, a process leaving dents on one flat side, and was subsequently cut along one long …

Lead ingot fragment. One end of a cast square-section ingot with an obliquely cut end. Deep cuts, some intersecting, appear randomly distributed across all straight faces of the object. Lightly patinated. Comparable surface markings and surface condition appear on a Roman steelyard weight reported from the immediate vicinity (NLM-FB4179), and a similar date appears apt. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410 Length: 46.7mm, Width: 36.8mm, Thickness: 35.5mm, Weight: slightly in excess of 500gms

A Roman lead ingot, or "pig" probably dating to the period c. AD 150-402. The ingot is rectangular in plan and trapezoidal in cross-section with rounded corners and no inscription visible on the top.
