 Fitting. A thick curved cast object, possibly bent around a former or the edge of another object. Three sharply moulded circumferential ribs are set centrally on its convex surface; the central rib expands forming a triangular field at each edge, where it is flanked by the other two ribs. Suggested date: Late Iron Age, 300 BC to 100 AD.

It is damaged to the underside, where the two halves join, and missing the thinned edge here.&#13;
&#13;
The ferrule or bead is 18.89mm long, 21.79mm wide and 17.29mm high (its internal measurements are 16.76x13.04mm). It is decorated with two concentric incised lines. On the underside, these peter out where the surface is flattened. It is likely this part would have been underneath an overlapping edge, which is now missing.&#13;
&#13;
A similar object has been recorded from Weston Under Penyard, Herefordshire (HESH-3A6F76). This is described as a copper alloy bead of probable late Iron Age or Early Roman date (50BC-200AD), veering more towards the Early Roman date. Although very similar, this object has been cast in one piece. The Wiltshire example is likely to be of a similar date.</description><fourFigureLon>-1.743186</fourFigureLon></result><result><district>WEST WILTSHIRE</district><objecttype>FERRULE</objecttype><county>WILTSHIRE</county><created>2005-04-21T12:22:59Z</created><regionName>SOUTH WEST</regionName><diameter>5</diameter><fromdate>-700</fromdate><materialTerm>Copper alloy</materialTerm><length>20</length><filename>Vchape2.jpg</filename><thumbnail>58699</thumbnail><creator>Katie Hinds</creator><identifier>Katie Hinds</identifier><id>93768</id><knownas>Kingston Deverill</knownas><old_findID>WILT-7A9021</old_findID><workflow>4</workflow><parish>Restricted Access</parish><weight>1.01</weight><imagedir>images/khinds/</imagedir><updated>2011-02-24T13:51:20Z</updated><quantity>1</quantity><todate>1500</todate><broadperiod>IRON AGE</broadperiod><fourFigureLat>0</fourFigureLat><thickness>0.5</thickness><description>Copper alloy cone-shaped ferrule extending into a rolled-sheet hook at its end. The metal is bluey-green in colour, suggestive of an Iron Age or Roman date, but this is uncertain. It may also be medieval.
